How to find an in-home caregiver in Humboldt County
Most of the county's care services cluster around Humboldt Bay. Adult day health, Redwood Coast PACE and the Area 1 volunteer drivers all describe roughly the same territory, from Trinidad in the north to Scotia in the south and inland as far as Blue Lake. Caregivers who live in Eureka, Arcata, McKinleyville or Fortuna can usually reach homes anywhere in that zone. For a parent in Southern Humboldt, the Hoopa Valley or Willow Creek, write the town in your first line, mention mileage, and consider fewer, longer shifts rather than daily short visits.
Spell out what your relative needs before anyone applies. Of residents 65 and over, 34.7% report a disability in the ACS 2020–2024, and 7,570 households are someone 65 or older living alone. Note whether the home has stairs, whether your parent can be left for an hour, and whether a pet lives there. Spanish is the home language for 6.8% of those aged five or more; if your relative is more at ease in Spanish or another language, put that near the top. Below this text, caregiver profiles are ordered by how close each one lives to the code you type in; new sign-ups are added as they come.

Types of in-home care families in Humboldt County arrange
All non-medical. For nursing tasks (injections, wound care, catheters) you need a licensed home health agency, not a private caregiver.
- Senior care at home: meals, reminders, housekeeping, errands, company.
- Personal care: bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, transfers.
- Companion care: conversation, walks, appointments, errands.
- Dementia care: routine-based support; ask for experience.
- Respite care: shifts so a family caregiver can rest or work.
- Overnight and live-in: night supervision or room-and-board arrangements.
- Post-surgery recovery: non-medical help after a hospital stay.
- Part-time and flexible: a few hours on set days is the usual start.
Evaluating caregivers in Humboldt County
Ask what an applicant can prove. Humboldt County IHSS providers have registered in the state's BOUNDS system, attended an in-person orientation with photo ID and Social Security card, and passed a Live Scan fingerprint check; providers on the Public Authority's Caregiver Registry have been screened by its staff. Home care organizations licensed by CDSS can only send aides who are listed on its Home Care Aide Registry; for self-employed caregivers that listing is a choice. Certified nursing assistants are listed by CDPH; Eureka Adult School trains them locally. Phone a couple of households the applicant has worked for, let your parent meet them, and try one paid shift before committing to a schedule. None of that checking is done by CaregiverConnect; if you want a criminal record report, get the applicant's signed permission and order it yourself.
Questions families here ask at interview
- Which town do you live in, and how long is your drive to us on a weekday morning?
- Have you cared for anyone discharged from St. Joseph, Mad River or Redwood Memorial?
- Are you an enrolled IHSS provider in Humboldt County, or on the Public Authority registry?
- Could you drive Mom to adult day in Eureka or Fortuna and collect her afterward?
- If Highway 101 is closed by a slide or a storm, what would you do about your shift?
- Has a client of yours ever wandered at night, and what did you do about it?
- Would you be comfortable with Dad's dog and a wood stove in the house?
What in-home care costs in Humboldt County: hourly rates and schedules
Eureka and Arcata. Morning and evening visits around family work hours, and rides to clinics or the Heritage Cafés. McKinleyville and Fortuna. Daytime blocks that pair with adult day or PACE. Southern Humboldt and the 299 corridor. Longer shifts, weekends and occasional overnights, so a caregiver is not making a long drive twice a day.
| Reference point | Hourly | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Employed aides, North Coast nonmetropolitan area (Del Norte, Humboldt, Lake, Mendocino) | $16.74 median | BLS OEWS, May 2025 |
| IHSS provider wage, Humboldt County | $18.40 | CDSS; effective January 1, 2026 |
| California minimum wage | $16.90 | effective January 1, 2026 |
| Agency non-medical home care, California median (CareScout 2025) | $40.00 | CareScout Cost of Care Survey 2025 |
Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.
Four reference points help when you set a private rate: the $16.90 state minimum (no Humboldt city has a higher local floor in UC Berkeley's inventory), the $16.74 May 2025 median for aides across the four-county North Coast area, the $18.40 Humboldt County pays IHSS providers, and CareScout's $40 California median for agency care. Paying at or slightly above the IHSS rate keeps you competitive with county work. California's domestic worker overtime rule adds half again to the hourly rate past nine hours on one day or 45 hours in one week. With Medi-Cal in the picture, phone IHSS (707-476-2100) first: a county worker comes to the house and decides how many hours the program will pay for.
No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.

Call 707-476-2100 or 866-527-8614. Eligibility rests on Medi-Cal, on being aged 65-plus, blind or disabled, and on living in one's own home; a DHHS employee then visits to assess what help is needed. A family member can be the paid provider.
