How to find an in-home caregiver in Fort Bragg

Fort Bragg has 7,142 residents by the state's January 2026 estimate. In the 2020–2024 census survey its median age is 49.0, nearly a quarter of residents (23.7%) are 65 or older, and 566 of the city's 3,135 households are one person 65-plus living alone. Families usually start a search when a parent at home needs a hand with bathing, meals, laundry or the drive to an appointment at Mendocino Coast Clinics or the hospital on River Drive, or when memory loss means someone should be there for part of the day.

In the post, give the street or neighborhood, the weekly hours and any driving involved; 11.2% of Fort Bragg households have no vehicle, and the senior bus and Dial-A-Ride run only within set coast boundaries. If your parent prefers Spanish, mention it; nearly one Fort Bragg resident in five uses it at home. Applicants may come from town, from Cleone or from inland, since MTA Route 65 links Fort Bragg with Willits and Ukiah every day. Caregivers closest to the address you enter are listed first, and more appear as people register.

Choosing well

Evaluating caregivers in Fort Bragg

Treat every claim as something to confirm. A CNA's certificate can be looked up with CDPH; a Mendocino County IHSS provider has gone through the state's fingerprinting and orientation; and the Home Care Aide Registry lists everyone who works for a licensed home care organization, plus any independent who chose to join. Applicants who have worked at Sherwood Oaks or for the Adventist home health or hospice teams should be able to describe transfers, bathing and skin checks in detail. Interview face to face, ring the references without the applicant on the line, and pay for one supervised trial visit. Nobody at CaregiverConnect screens applicants, and a background report requires the applicant to agree in writing.

Questions families here ask at interview

  • My mother goes to the Alzheimer's day program on Harold Street Monday to Thursday. Could you be with her before and after?
  • When a client of yours was discharged from Adventist Health Mendocino Coast, how did the first few days at home go?
  • Would you drive my father to dialysis on Cypress Street and wait with him?
  • Our house is heated with propane and a wood stove. Are you comfortable keeping the fire going?
  • If the power goes out overnight, what would you do first for someone on oxygen?
  • My father is more at ease in Spanish. Can you hold a whole conversation with him in it?
  • If the county approves IHSS hours for my mother, would you go through provider enrollment?

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

UC Berkeley's inventory shows no Fort Bragg wage law, so a privately hired Fort Bragg caregiver is owed no less than California's $16.90. Other benchmarks: aides across the North Coast nonmetro area earn a $16.74 BLS median, Mendocino County pays IHSS providers $19.71, and California agencies billed a $40 median hour in the 2025 CareScout survey. DIR's rule for personal attendants you employ: time-and-a-half kicks in at hour ten of a workday and at hour 46 of a workweek. Fort Bragg's median household income is $56,481 in the census survey. If your parent has Medi-Cal or may qualify, ask the county about IHSS before you pay privately for every hour; Mendocino Coast Clinics' patient advocates can help with the Medi-Cal application.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.
