How to find an in-home caregiver in Ukiah

Ukiah, home to 16,138 people on January 1, 2026 (Department of Finance), is the largest city in Mendocino County. It is also where the county's IHSS office, its largest hospital and the county office of education's nurse assistant course are based. Describe the tasks, the hours and the part of town in your post, and say if the job includes driving to Adventist Health Ukiah Valley on Hospital Drive or to clinics on South Dora Street.

Plan around who your parent is. In ACS 2020–2024, 3,228 Ukiah residents are 65 or older, and 49.7% of them report a disability, a much higher share than the 37.6% county figure. In 1,336 homes an older resident lives alone. At home, 23.8% of people aged five or more speak Spanish, so asking for a bilingual caregiver is realistic.

Choosing well

Evaluating caregivers in Ukiah

Ask to see proof of what each applicant claims. Mendocino County IHSS providers are fingerprinted for a Justice Department check, which Ukiah applicants usually complete at the 747 South State Street office. Certified nursing assistants are certified by CDPH; locally, MCOE teaches the course on Old River Road and Mendocino College trains vocational and registered nurses. Ring two references, have your parent meet the finalists, and pay for one trial shift. We run no background checks and confirm no licenses here; any report your family wants is ordered by you, with the applicant's written permission.

Schedules and cost

What in-home care costs in Ukiah: hourly rates and schedules

Day program days. The senior center's Lunch Bunch runs Monday to Thursday from 11:00 to 2:00, so families often book a caregiver for mornings and late afternoons on those days and longer hours on Fridays and weekends. A two- or three-hour visit for bathing, meals and medication reminders is a common request from parents who live alone.

California minimum wage$16.90effective January 1, 2026

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

With no Ukiah ordinance in UC Berkeley's inventory, the lowest legal private rate is the state's $16.90. Across the North Coast nonmetro region, BLS puts the aide median at $16.74, and Mendocino County pays IHSS providers $19.71, which is the rate many experienced local caregivers will know. If the family is the employer of a personal attendant, overtime starts after the ninth hour of a day or the 45th hour of a week. The senior center's Lunch Bunch, at $30 a day, costs less than three hours of care at the state minimum wage. If your parent has Medi-Cal, contact the IHSS office at 747 South State Street, (707) 463-7900, to see whether county-paid hours could take on some of the cost.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.
