How to find an in-home caregiver in Lucerne

Lucerne is an unincorporated census-designated place, and the state's licensing files currently show no assisted living, nursing home, home health agency or home care organization at a Lucerne address; an adult day center that once ran on Country Club Drive closed in 2021. Help at home comes from a caregiver you hire yourself, from an IHSS provider if your parent has Medi-Cal and qualifies, or from an agency elsewhere in Lake County that agrees to cover Lucerne. Hiring directly lets you set the hours, the tasks and the rate with the person who will actually come.

When you post, describe the house as well as the person. More than a quarter of Lucerne's housing units (27.6%) are mobile homes, so mention steps, a ramp, grab bars or a narrow bathroom. Say whether the caregiver must drive: Lake Transit lists Dial-A-Ride for Clearlake/Lower Lake and for Lakeport, not for Lucerne, and 12.5% of households here have no vehicle. Profiles change as caregivers join and update them, so look again during the week.

Choosing well

Evaluating caregivers in Lucerne

Ask every applicant what paperwork they hold, then check it. Agency staff from a licensed home care organization have to be on the state's aide registry, which CDSS lets the public search by name; for independents, registering is voluntary. A CNA holds a CDPH certificate; the nearest course is LCOE's in Lakeport. A Lake County IHSS provider has created an online account, watched the state videos and attended an in-person orientation in Lower Lake with ID. Ring two references, have your parent ask some of the interview questions, and pay for a single trial morning first; settle the weekly schedule after that. CaregiverConnect does no screening and no background checks; any background report is your own to commission, with the applicant's written permission.

Questions families here ask at interview

  • Where do you live, and if you take the bus, would the Highway 20 and 1st Street stop work for you?
  • Mom's mobile home has three steps at the door. What is your safe way to get her up and down them?
  • Could you book a Lake Transit Flex Stop or a Medi-Links ride and go with her to the appointment?
  • Do you already have a Lake County IHSS provider number? If not, would you apply for one?
  • Dad likes the Lucerne Alpine Senior Center. Would you take him there and pick him up?
  • What experience do you have with walkers, wheelchairs or moving someone from bed to chair?
  • If you are ill or the car breaks down, how early can you let us know, and is there a backup?
Schedules and cost

What in-home care costs in Lucerne: hourly rates and schedules

Typical Lucerne requests are an early visit to help with a wash, clothes and the first meal; an afternoon block for shopping, laundry and supper; and, for someone just home from a hospital or skilled nursing stay, longer days for a few weeks. Families with a relative nearby often ask for two or three set weekdays plus cover when that relative is away. Give exact hours, and mention whether trips out of Lucerne are expected.

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

Berkeley's July 2026 wage inventory shows nothing for Lucerne or the rest of Lake County, so California's $16.90 is the minimum you may pay someone you employ directly. For context, BLS found a $16.74 aide median across Lake, Del Norte, Humboldt and Mendocino in May 2025; Lake County IHSS pays providers $17.55; and CareScout's 2025 figures put California agency home care at a $40 hourly median. A personal attendant on your payroll is owed time-and-a-half from the tenth hour of any day and from the 46th hour of any week. With Lucerne households at a $56,625 median income (ACS 2020–2024), IHSS is worth checking; Lake County requires Medi-Cal eligibility first, so call Adult Services on (707) 995-4680 before you set a budget.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.

Questions

Hiring a caregiver in Lucerne: frequently asked questions

Does Lucerne have a home care agency or assisted living?

No. The current CDSS and CDPH files list no home care organization, elder care home, home health agency or nursing facility at a Lucerne address, so families mostly hire privately or go through IHSS.

Is the Lucerne senior center open?

The county's aging agency still lists Lucerne Alpine Senior Center, 3985 Country Club Drive, with the number (707) 274-8779. The latest dated report we found, from September 2024, gave weekday hours of 10 to 1; phone before you go.

Can my mother get meals delivered in Lucerne?

Ask the Lakeport Senior Center, (707) 263-4218, which the Area Agency on Aging lists as serving Lucerne and which delivers Meals on Wheels to homebound people aged 60 or more. Contributions are suggested, not required.

How does a Lucerne senior reach a doctor without a car?

Route 1 stops at Highway 20 and 1st Street, and a Flex Stop booked a day ahead brings the bus to the curb within a mile of the route. For specialist visits, Medi-Links needs a week's notice and lets a caregiver ride along free.

Do Lucerne caregivers need to speak Spanish?

Rarely. ACS 2020–2024 finds 7.7% of Lucerne residents aged five-plus using Spanish at home, and under 1% have limited English. A parent who prefers Spanish should be mentioned in the first sentence of your request.
