How to find an in-home caregiver in Cloverdale
A large share of Cloverdale households are caring for, or will soon care for, an older relative. The ACS 2020–2024 estimates put 41.2% of the city's households in the "someone 65 or older lives here" group and count 491 seniors living by themselves. Nearly one in four residents (23.6%) is 65-plus, and among them 34.1% report a disability. When you post, spell out the routine: a check at breakfast, a ride on the shuttle to lunch at the senior center, the bath that is hard to manage alone, or cover for the afternoons you are at work.
Spanish is common in Cloverdale homes: the same survey finds it spoken by 29.9% of people aged five and up, so tell applicants if your mother or father mainly speaks Spanish. Private care in town is mostly arranged family to family: state licensing lists no home care agency with a Cloverdale address. The profiles listed below are the ones closest to 95425; new caregivers appear there when they sign up.

Evaluating caregivers in Cloverdale
Ask each applicant which credential, if any, applies to them. Any aide an agency sends you needs a CDSS Home Care Aide Registry number, so ask for it along with the agency's name; a caregiver you employ yourself can, but need not, register. A CNA's certificate comes from CDPH and can be looked up; ask where they trained, for instance at Santa Rosa Junior College, and where they last worked. An IHSS provider should tell you whether they are already enrolled with Sonoma County. Then ring two earlier clients or employers, have your parent spend time with your top choice, and pay for one trial shift that a relative sits in on. CaregiverConnect does no checks or vetting of its own; a background report has to be ordered by you, from a screening company with the applicant's written permission.
Questions families here ask at interview
- Which town are you coming from, and can you be at our door by 8 a.m.?
- Could you take my mother to the Clover Lunch Club at the senior center and stay with her there?
- Are you comfortable helping my father onto a shower bench and out again?
- My mother prefers Spanish. Can you keep her company and handle her care in Spanish?
- Have you worked at Cloverdale Healthcare Center or one of the local care homes?
- How would you get my father to an appointment at Alexander Valley Healthcare on Tarman Drive?
- Are you enrolled as a Sonoma County IHSS provider, or willing to enroll?
What in-home care costs in Cloverdale: hourly rates and schedules
Morning starts. An hour or two for getting up, washing, breakfast and medicines, often five days a week. Midday outings. The shuttle or a car to the senior center for a $8 lunch or a chair yoga class, then errands at the Furber Ranch shops. Weekend and night cover. Saturday and Sunday shifts, or a few overnights after a discharge from a Santa Rosa or Healdsburg hospital, so the usual family caregiver gets a break.
| Reference point | Hourly | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Employed aides, Santa Rosa–Petaluma, CA metro | $17.72 median | BLS OEWS, May 2025 |
| IHSS provider wage, Sonoma County | $20.25 | CDSS; effective March 1, 2026 |
| California minimum wage | $16.90 | effective January 1, 2026 |
| Agency non-medical home care, California median (CareScout 2025) | $40.00 | CareScout Cost of Care Survey 2025 |
Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.
Cloverdale has no wage ordinance on UC Berkeley's Labor Center list; the floor for a caregiver on your own payroll is therefore California's $16.90. To compare: BLS found a $17.72 median for Sonoma County aides in May 2025, Sonoma County IHSS providers are on $20.25, and CareScout's 2025 survey sets California's agency price for non-medical home care at a $40 median. Hiring directly usually lands between those last two figures; dementia care and nights cost more. Budget for overtime as well, since a live-out personal attendant on your payroll earns time and a half after a nine-hour day and after 45 hours in the week. Before you pay out of pocket, check IHSS. Sonoma County serves residents who need help to keep living safely at home and who receive or qualify for Medi-Cal; Information and Assistance takes calls at (707) 565-4636. For a parent whose home is in Mendocino County, that county's program and its $19.71 wage apply instead.
No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.
