How to find an in-home caregiver in Sebastopol

Sebastopol is an older city. Half the population is over 49.1, the ACS 2020–2024 median, more than a quarter (27.9%) has reached 65, and 48.3% of households include a person that age. Some 735 older residents live alone, most of them women, and 11.1% of households have no car. If your parent no longer drives, say so. Note in your post whether the caregiver will need to run errands, take your parent to the senior center or a clinic on Palm Avenue, or simply be there through the afternoon.

Hiring is mostly direct. Sebastopol has no home health agency in CDPH data and no licensed home care organization in CDSS records, so replies generally come from independent caregivers, IHSS providers and nurse assistants looking for private hours. The caregiver profiles nearest 95472 are listed below and update when new caregivers register.

Choosing well

Evaluating caregivers in Sebastopol

Ask which rules apply to the applicant. Agency aides must be registered with CDSS as home care aides, and their employer licensed; write down both the aide's registration number and the agency name. Independent caregivers you hire may register, but the law does not require it. If someone says they are a CNA, ask for the CDPH certificate number. If they are an IHSS provider, ask whether they finished Sonoma County's enrollment. Phone two past employers or client families, let your parent get to know the front-runner, and pay for a first shift that you or a sibling attends. CaregiverConnect itself runs no checks. Families who want a criminal-record report commission one from a licensed screening firm, and only with the applicant's written OK.

Questions families here ask at interview

  • Where do you live, and do you have your own car for errands and appointments?
  • Could you bring my father to the Harvest Cafe for lunch and back?
  • Have you worked with patients coming home from post-acute rehab?
  • My mother lives on her own. If you arrived and found she had fallen, what would you do first?
  • Are you an IHSS provider in Sonoma County, or could you enroll?
  • Would you be willing to borrow a walker or wheelchair from the senior center's loan closet and set it up for her?
  • Are you comfortable caring for an LGBTQ+ elder and their partner?

What in-home care costs in Sebastopol: hourly rates and schedules

Daily check-ins. A morning or evening hour for washing, meals and medications. Lunch and outing days. A late-morning start, lunch at the Harvest Cafe on North High Street, then shopping at Safeway or Lucky's along the Route 24 shuttle line. Recovery cover. Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

UC Berkeley's Labor Center lists local wage floors for Santa Rosa and Petaluma but not for Sebastopol, so the lowest legal rate for a caregiver your household employs is California's $16.90. For comparison, Sonoma County aides had a $17.72 median in May 2025 (BLS), the county IHSS rate is $20.25 from March 1, 2026, and CareScout's 2025 California median for non-medical agency care is $40 an hour. Direct hires tend to cost more than IHSS and less than agencies, rising for nights and dementia care. Overtime rules reach families too. A Sebastopol household that directly employs a personal attendant owes premium pay for a shift longer than nine hours and for a week longer than 45 (California DIR). Check IHSS before paying privately: Sonoma County's program is for people who need in-home help to stay safely where they live and who have Medi-Cal or qualify for it. Calls go to Information and Assistance, (707) 565-4636.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.
