How to find an in-home caregiver in Guerneville

Guerneville is an unincorporated census-designated place, and none of the hospices, home health agencies or home care organizations in the current CDPH and CDSS files has a 95446 address. In practice that leaves three routes: hire an independent caregiver yourself, apply for IHSS if your relative has Medi-Cal, or contract with an agency based elsewhere in the county that is willing to send aides out to Guerneville. A private hire gives you the most say over hours and tasks.

In 39.8% of Guerneville households at least one person is 65 or over (ACS 2020–2024), and 500 older residents live by themselves. Most residents speak only English at home; 6.5% of those five and older use another language, mainly Spanish. Write your post around the real day: which hours, which tasks, whether a car is needed, and whether your parent lives on the Route 28 or Route 20 bus line. Caregivers sign up continually, so check the list again a few days after posting.

Choosing well

Evaluating caregivers in Guerneville

Ask each applicant what they can prove and then check it. An aide who came from a licensed agency ought to have a Home Care Aide Registry number that you can look up on the CDSS site; an independent caregiver may not have one, since it is optional for them. Certified nurse assistants hold a CDPH certificate, and Santa Rosa Junior College runs the nearest course. Anyone paid through Sonoma County IHSS has completed the state's provider enrollment. Phone two past employers, let your parent sit in on the interview, and book one paid trial visit. CaregiverConnect itself checks nothing, whether background, license or references; a background report is yours to order, and only after the applicant agrees in writing.

Questions families here ask at interview

  • Do you have a car, and if not, can you get here on Route 20 or the free Route 28 shuttle at the hours we need?
  • Have you worked with patients of the Russian River Health and Wellness Center on First Street, or helped someone keep appointments there?
  • Dad likes the Senior Center lunches on Armstrong Woods Road. Could you go with him and stay?
  • Mom lives alone. How would you check on her between visits, and who would you call first if something seemed wrong?
  • Do you have an IHSS provider number from Sonoma County, or a Home Care Aide Registry listing?
  • Can you cover a weekend or an overnight now and then when I cannot get up from Santa Rosa?
Schedules and cost

What in-home care costs in Guerneville: hourly rates and schedules

With so many older residents living alone, the usual request is a short daily or alternate-day visit for bathing, a meal and medication. Families who live farther away often add one longer weekly block for groceries, the pharmacy and appointments. If a parent has started to fall or wander at night, post an overnight shift separately from the daytime hours so the right applicants respond.

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

Guerneville has no local wage ordinance in the Berkeley Labor Center's July 2026 inventory, so a caregiver you hire directly must get at least the $16.90 state minimum. BLS put the May 2025 aide median at $17.72 across the Santa Rosa–Petaluma metro, and Sonoma County IHSS pays its providers $20.25. Agencies cost more: CareScout's 2025 survey found a $40 hourly California median for non-medical agency care, more than twice the state minimum. For a personal attendant, the Domestic Worker Bill of Rights requires overtime pay beyond 9 hours daily or 45 weekly. If your relative receives or qualifies for Medi-Cal, ask the county about IHSS first: (707) 565-4636.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.
