How to find an in-home caregiver in Middletown

Middletown, an unincorporated community in south Lake County, is young and largely bilingual by Census estimates: the median age is 29.5, and Spanish is the home language of 60.7% of residents over age four. In a town this young, many requests come from working families who want daytime help for a parent or grandparent rather than round-the-clock care. Say in your post which language your relative is most comfortable in and whether the caregiver needs to read English medication labels or speak with doctors in English.

No assisted living home, licensed home care organization or nursing home is listed in 95461 in the state's files, and an adult day program that once operated at the senior center address closed in 2021. Caregivers who respond may live in Middletown, Hidden Valley Lake, Cobb or Clearlake. Caregivers living nearest your ZIP are listed first under this text, and the list grows as people join.

Choosing well

Evaluating caregivers in Middletown

Find out what credentials each applicant has and check every one. A Lake County IHSS provider has been through county orientation and a fingerprint check. Agency aides must be on the Home Care Aide Registry; for independent caregivers it is optional. CDPH certifies nursing assistants. If your relative prefers Spanish, hold part of the interview in Spanish. Speak to two references and try one paid shift before committing to a regular schedule. CaregiverConnect does not screen caregivers or run background checks; you arrange any check yourself, and it needs the applicant's signed consent.

Questions families here ask at interview

  • ¿Habla usted español? My grandmother understands little English. How would you explain her medicines to her?
  • Can you come while we are at work, roughly 7 to 5, and stay until one of us gets home?
  • Would you take her to the Adventist Health clinic on Bush Street, or to St. Helena if she needs the hospital?
  • Are you already an IHSS provider in Lake County, or would you enroll so IHSS can pay for her hours?
  • Do you know our neighborhood's evacuation route, and what would you do with her if an alert came during your shift?
  • How do you keep her moving and eating well when she does not want to leave her chair?

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

Hiring directly in Middletown, the starting point is California's $16.90 minimum wage; there is no local ordinance in Lake County in the UC Berkeley Labor Center inventory. Aides across the North Coast nonmetro area earned a $16.74 BLS median in May 2025, and Lake County IHSS pays $17.55. Agency care, by CareScout's 2025 survey, has a California median of $40.00 an hour. A bilingual caregiver who drives may reasonably ask for more than the minimum. When you employ a personal attendant directly, overtime starts after nine hours in one day or 45 in one week. If your relative has or may qualify for Medi-Cal, ask Lake County about IHSS, which can pay a family member to give the care.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.

CaregiverConnect is a marketplace, not an agency: you hire the caregiver directly, which is why there is no agency mark-up on their hourly rate. That also means screening is your responsibility, and we tell you how.

Questions

Hiring a caregiver in Middletown: frequently asked questions

Will we find a caregiver in Middletown who speaks Spanish?

Spanish is the home language of most Middletown residents by Census estimates, so it is a reasonable request. Put it at the top of your post, and in the interview ask how comfortable the caregiver is with English paperwork too.

Is there adult day care in Middletown?

Not now. State licensing records show an adult day program at 21256 Washington Street that closed in 2021, and no other in 95461. The senior center's weekday lunch is the nearest thing to a daytime program in town.

Where does my mother see a doctor in Middletown?

Two clinics are on the state list: the Adventist Health primary care clinic on Bush Street and the twice-monthly Lake County Tribal Health clinic on CA-29. For hospital care, Adventist Health Clearlake is 17.2 road miles off; Adventist Health St. Helena is 26.2.

Can we be paid to care for our own grandmother?

Possibly, through IHSS. If she is eligible for Medi-Cal and the county approves hours, she can choose a relative as her provider, who is paid $17.55 an hour in Lake County. Apply through Adult Services in Lower Lake; the Lake County page has the steps.

Who delivers meals to seniors in Middletown?

The Middletown Senior Center. Its kitchen prepares the meals, and drivers leave at 11 a.m. on routes that take up to two and a half hours. Call (707) 987-3113 to ask about eligibility.

Is CaregiverConnect free for Middletown families?
