How to find an in-home caregiver in Lake County

About two-thirds of Lake County's 66,793 residents live outside its two cities, by the state's January 2026 count, so where the home sits shapes the search. A request in Clearlake or Lakeport is within reach of many local caregivers. A home on the North Shore or up toward Cobb draws fewer applicants, so say in the post how far out it is, whether a bus stops nearby, and whether you need someone who can drive to the doctor.

Spell out language too. In ACS 2020–2024, Spanish is the home language of 17.3% of county residents over age four, and 5.2% speak Spanish with limited English. A Spanish-speaking grandparent is a detail worth putting in the first line of the post. The profiles under this text are arranged by how close each caregiver lives to your ZIP code, and new ones appear as people sign up.

What you can post

Types of in-home care families in Lake County arrange

All non-medical. For nursing tasks (injections, wound care, catheters) you need a licensed home health agency, not a private caregiver.

  • Senior care at home: meals, reminders, housekeeping, errands, company.
  • Personal care: bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, transfers.
  • Companion care: conversation, walks, appointments, errands.
  • Dementia care: routine-based support; ask for experience.
  • Respite care: shifts so a family caregiver can rest or work.
  • Overnight and live-in: night supervision or room-and-board arrangements.
  • Post-surgery recovery: non-medical help after a hospital stay.
  • Part-time and flexible: a few hours on set days is the usual start.
Choosing well

Evaluating caregivers in Lake County

Ask each applicant exactly which credentials they hold, and check them yourself. Lake County IHSS providers have gone through county enrollment, which includes the state orientation and a fingerprint background check. Registration on the state Home Care Aide Registry is a must for agency employees but a choice for independents; find out which an applicant is. Nursing assistants are certified by CDPH, and the Lake County Office of Education trains them in Lakeport. Phone two former employers, then book one paid trial visit before settling on regular hours. CaregiverConnect itself checks no identities, licenses or criminal histories, and a background report, if you want one, needs the applicant's signed consent and is arranged by you.

Questions families here ask at interview

  • How far away are you, and could you still come on a holiday or at short notice?
  • Which of your clients came home from Adventist Health Clearlake or Sutter Lakeside, and what help did they need?
  • Has Lake County Adult Services already enrolled you as an IHSS provider, or are you on the Public Authority registry?
  • Could you book a Medi-Links ride for my mother's specialist visit in Santa Rosa and go with her?
  • My dad prefers Spanish. Can you speak with him in Spanish and still follow his English medication labels?
  • If my mother ended up on the floor and was too heavy for you to lift, what would you do next?

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

Set a private rate with these figures in front of you. California's minimum wage is $16.90, and UC Berkeley's inventory shows no higher local rate in Lake County. Aides in the four-county North Coast nonmetro area earned a $16.74 BLS median. Lake County pays IHSS providers $17.55. CareScout's 2025 statewide figure for agency home care, based on 44 hours a week, works out to $40 an hour. Hire a personal attendant directly and time-and-a-half is due on hours past nine in one day or past 45 in one week. The county says IHSS applicants must be eligible for Medi-Cal; if your parent is, or may be, ask Adult Services on (707) 995-4680 before you budget, because approved IHSS hours could pay for part of the care.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.
