Finding in-home caregiver jobs in Ukiah

The City of Ukiah describes the area as the center of life in Mendocino County since 1859, and for care work that still holds. The county's main Ukiah campus is on Low Gap Road, and its IHSS and Adult Protective Services office is at 747 South State Street. CDPH lists Adventist Health Ukiah Valley, at 68 licensed beds the largest of the county's three general hospitals, along with two skilled nursing facilities on South Dora Street, a home health agency and a dialysis center. Of the county's 163 licensed beds in elder care homes, 113 are in Ukiah, spread over eight homes, according to the state care-home file.

Ukiah is a little younger than the county around it but has a high share of frail elders. ACS 2020–2024 counts 3,228 residents aged 65 and over (19.8%, against 24.5% county-wide) and 414 aged 85 and over. Nearly half of those 65 and older, 49.7%, report a disability, compared with 37.6% across the county, and in 1,336 Ukiah households a person 65-plus lives on their own. A third of residents (32.8%) are Hispanic or Latino, and 23.8% of people five and up speak Spanish at home. Say in your profile whether you speak Spanish, can help with transfers and will drive to appointments.

Types of caregiver jobs

Types of caregiver jobs in Ukiah

Ukiah care jobs come from three places. Families paying privately, and IHSS recipients, want in-home help with personal care, meals, housework and errands. Skilled nursing facilities and the hospital hire certified nursing assistants. And the residential care homes, most of them licensed for six to twelve residents, need staff for daily care. With no experience, IHSS for a relative or neighbor is a common start.

Pay

Caregiver pay in Ukiah: how much caregivers make

Public figures first, then what they mean for private work. Statistics describe employed aides across the North Coast Region of California nonmetropolitan area (includes Mendocino County); private rates on CaregiverConnect are agreed between each caregiver and family and are not tracked by any agency.

Who is the employer. A family that hires you directly is your employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

About 6.1% of Ukiah's labor force was unemployed, on average, between August 2025 and August 2026, according to EDD estimates. That is above Mendocino County's 5.7% and California's 5.3%, and the monthly estimate ran from 5.0% to 6.9%. For a Ukiah resident who wants dependable hours, IHSS through Mendocino County pays $19.71 an hour, $2.81 more than the state minimum, which is also the floor for private work because UC Berkeley's inventory lists no Ukiah wage ordinance. A CNA certificate is the main step up: nursing assistants across the four-county North Coast region earn a $23.12 median, against $16.74 for home health and personal care aides.

How to enroll as a provider in Mendocino County, with the office phone lines and orientation steps, is in the IHSS Mendocino County guide. IHSS wages for every county we cover, with effective dates, are in the IHSS pay by county guide.

How the public numbers relate to private rates, and what affects them, is covered in the caregiver pay guide.

Rules

Caregiver requirements in California, applied to Ukiah

Ukiah has no rules of its own beyond the state's. No license is needed when a Ukiah family itself employs you for non-medical tasks, and you must join the Home Care Aide Registry only when working for a licensed home care organization, of which CDSS shows one in Ukiah. Enrolling for IHSS is simplest in Ukiah: the 747 South State Street office takes Live Scan fingerprints on site during your in-person appointment, (707) 463-7900. Other steps: Mendocino County page. For nursing facility or hospital aide posts, expect to need CDPH certification as a nurse assistant, now available through a Ukiah course. State law also obliges anyone paid to give care to report possible mistreatment of an elder or dependent adult. More: California caregiver requirements.
