Finding in-home caregiver jobs in Covelo

As a census-designated place, Covelo has no municipal government of its own. Mendocino County supplies public services, and much of daily life runs through two local institutions. The Round Valley Indian Health Center, a nonprofit founded in 1968, gives primary care to about 3,000 people living in Covelo and on the adjacent Round Valley Indian Reservation, by its own count. The Round Valley Indian Tribes, a federally recognized confederation whose offices sit about a mile north of town, run the community's senior meal program. The health center describes Covelo as a remote valley community 25 miles east of Highway 101, with the nearest hospital and emergency room in Willits.

That distance shapes the work. A caregiver who already lives in Round Valley can cover an early start, a short-notice shift or a second visit in the evening; one who commutes from Willits cannot do that cheaply. ACS 2020–2024 counts 163 Covelo residents aged 65 or older, and 121 of its 444 households have one living there. Roughly 37% of older residents report a disability, although that estimate comes from a small sample and its margin is wide. Put "Round Valley" or "Covelo" in the first line of your profile, list the days you are free, and mention if you will drive clients out to Willits or Ukiah. Spanish is worth listing too: 34.8% of Covelo residents over age four use it in their households.

Types of caregiver jobs in Covelo

Expect requests for a few hours of help in a family home: bathing, dressing, meals, housework and someone around while relatives work. Rides are a large part of the job, because the clinic's own transport program is limited and, according to Mendocino Transit Authority's published route list, no MTA bus runs to Covelo. Someone with no paid experience can start with companionship, cooking and errands for a neighbor, and IHSS can pay a relative or friend once the county approves the client. Hospital and nursing-home jobs elsewhere in the county usually ask for a CNA certificate.

Pay

Caregiver pay in Covelo: how much caregivers make

Public figures first, then what they mean for private work. Statistics describe employed aides across the North Coast Region of California nonmetropolitan area (Mendocino, Del Norte, Humboldt and Lake counties); private rates on CaregiverConnect are agreed between each caregiver and family and are not tracked by any agency.

Who is the employer. A family that hires you directly is your employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

About 15.0% of Covelo's labor force was unemployed, on average, between August 2025 and August 2026, according to EDD estimates. With a labor force near 424, Covelo is small enough that EDD derives its figure from county-level data, so read it as approximate; monthly values ran from 12.5% to 17.0%. For comparison, Mendocino County averaged 5.7% and California 5.3% over the same months. Where steady jobs are scarce, authorized hours through Mendocino County IHSS, at $19.71 an hour, can give a caregiver who lives in the valley a dependable income.

No Mendocino County place appears in UC Berkeley's inventory of local wage ordinances, so a Covelo family hiring you privately may not pay below the state's $16.90 floor, and Round Valley families who keep you on long days owe a personal attendant overtime, at 150% of pay, for any time past nine hours daily or 45 weekly. Local wages give a sense of the market: the health center's current job list starts a dental receptionist at $18.00 an hour. ACS 2020–2024 puts Covelo's median household income at $34,583, with a margin of more than $23,000, and 75.5% of residents are on public health coverage; expect early questions about whether IHSS could fund the hours.

How to enroll as a provider in Mendocino County, with the office phone lines and orientation steps, is in the IHSS Mendocino County guide. IHSS wages for every county we cover, with effective dates, are in the IHSS pay by county guide.

How the public numbers relate to private rates, and what affects them, is covered in the caregiver pay guide.

Rules

Caregiver requirements in California, applied to Covelo

Because Covelo has no city government, there is no local caregiver license; California's rules apply. Helping a Covelo household with bathing, meals and errands requires no license. Agencies must place their staff on California's Home Care Aide Registry, yet CDSS's May 2025 licensing data shows no Covelo address for any home care organization, residential home for the elderly or adult residential facility. To become an IHSS provider for a Covelo client, contact Mendocino County's Willits office at 472 E. Valley Street, (707) 456-3700; enrollment includes online orientation, an identity check and a Live Scan fingerprint clearance. The Mendocino County IHSS guide lists the steps. Under state law, a paid Round Valley caregiver who suspects abuse of a client must report it. The California caregiver requirements guide covers the rest.

Questions

Caregiver jobs in Covelo: frequently asked questions

How high is unemployment in Covelo?

EDD's estimate for Covelo averaged about 15.0% from August 2025 to August 2026, against 5.7% for Mendocino County and 5.3% statewide. With a labor force of roughly 424, EDD bases it on county data, so it is a rough estimate.

What does IHSS pay a provider in Covelo?

Covelo clients are Mendocino County residents, and CDSS lists the county's IHSS provider wage as $19.71 an hour, effective January 1, 2026. Hours are set by the county for each client; the closest IHSS office is on East Valley Street in Willits.

Is there anywhere in Covelo to get fingerprinted?

Not on the Attorney General's Live Scan list. The closest sites it lists are in Willits, including the school district office on Blosser Lane and a private service on South Main Street.

Does Covelo have a nursing home or assisted living?

None appear in the state files. CDPH lists one licensed facility in Covelo, the Round Valley Indian Health Center clinic, and the CDSS file shows no licensed elder care home there, so paid care in the valley happens mostly in private homes.

Can my client get a ride to appointments in Willits?

Possibly, through the health center. It transports eligible patients, including homebound elders over 55 with no other way to travel, with a referral and three days' notice; out-of-town trips are mainly for dialysis. Otherwise plan to drive, since MTA lists no Covelo route.
