Types of caregiver jobs

Types of caregiver jobs in Mendocino County

Most private posts here ask for non-medical help at home: bathing, dressing, meals, light housework, laundry and errands, which are also the tasks the county lists for IHSS. An IHSS recipient hires, schedules and supervises the provider and signs the timesheets, and a relative or friend can be hired, or someone from the Public Authority registry. The county says no experience is required. Facility work is the other path: CDPH lists four skilled nursing facilities, four home health agencies and one hospice in the county.

  • Senior caregiving: day-to-day help so an older adult can stay at home.
  • Personal care: bathing, dressing, grooming, transfers.
  • Companion care: company, errands, appointments, light help.
  • Dementia care: routine-based support for memory loss.
  • Respite care: cover so a family caregiver can rest or work.
  • Live-in: room and board as part of the arrangement.
  • Overnight: supervision through the night.
  • Part-time and full-time: set by day and time block on your profile.
Pay

Caregiver pay in Mendocino County: how much caregivers make

Public figures first, then what they mean for private work. Statistics describe employed aides across the North Coast Region of California nonmetropolitan area (Mendocino, Del Norte, Humboldt and Lake counties); private rates on CaregiverConnect are agreed between each caregiver and family and are not tracked by any agency.

Who is the employer. A family that hires you directly is your employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

BLS does not publish wages for Mendocino County alone. Its May 2025 survey groups the county with Del Norte, Humboldt and Lake as one North Coast nonmetropolitan area, where 10,140 people worked as home health or personal care aides at a $16.74 median and a $17.16 mean. Its 3.34 location quotient means the job is over three times as common there as nationally. Nursing assistants in the same area, 640 of them, had a $23.12 median. Mendocino County pays IHSS providers $19.71 an hour from January 1, 2026, $2.81 more than the state minimum and $2.97 above the regional aide median. No Mendocino County city or town appears in UC Berkeley's local wage ordinance list, leaving $16.90 as the private-work floor. Personal attendants are due overtime beyond nine hours on any day, or 45 in any week.

About 5.7% of Mendocino County's labor force was unemployed, on average, between August 2025 and August 2026, according to EDD estimates, against California's 5.3%. The monthly figure ranged from 4.7% to 6.5%. Against those month-to-month swings, authorized hours through IHSS in Mendocino County give a provider a regular paycheck.

How to enroll as a provider in Mendocino County, with the office phone lines and orientation steps, is in the IHSS Mendocino County guide. IHSS wages for every county we cover, with effective dates, are in the IHSS pay by county guide.

Rules

Caregiver requirements in California, applied to Mendocino County

California does not license caregivers whom a family employs on its own for non-medical tasks. Only workers at licensed home care organizations must be on the state aide registry, and CDSS lists three of those in the county. County IHSS enrollment has three steps: online videos and e-signed forms; an in-person visit where you show current federal or state photo identification plus the Social Security card itself, both in the same name; then the Justice Department background check through Live Scan, at your own cost. Nursing facility aides are normally CDPH-certified nurse assistants, and every paid caregiver is legally bound to report signs that an elder is being abused. For the state picture, see California caregiver requirements.
