How to find an in-home caregiver in Gustine

Gustine skews older than most of Merced County. ACS 2020–2024 counts 1,064 residents aged 65 or over, 17.3% of the city, and 719 of its 2,503 households include at least one of them. Many older residents here live by themselves: 143 men and 93 women aged 65 and up are householders living alone. When you post, describe the household plainly: who lives there, what help is needed (bathing, meals, medications, rides, supervision), which days, how many hours and the rate you are offering.

Gustine is small, so the caregivers who answer may live in Newman, Los Banos or Santa Nella as well as in town. Say whether the job involves driving and whether your parent prefers Spanish; 44.6% of residents over age four speak it at home, by the census count. Profiles closest to 95322 show first, and the postings and profiles above update as families and caregivers join.

Choosing well

Evaluating caregivers in Gustine

A few credentials can be checked. A CNA certificate is issued and listed by CDPH. Someone enrolled as an IHSS provider has been through Live Scan fingerprinting and the county's orientation. Only agency-employed aides have to be listed on the Home Care Aide Registry, and CDSS's May 2025 data shows no licensed home care organization or elder care home operating in Gustine, so most applicants will be independent caregivers. Ask for two references, call both, and pay for a short first shift while you are there. Ask what they did the last time a client fell or skipped a dose. CaregiverConnect does not verify identities, records or references; a background check, if you want one, is something you order with the candidate's signed permission.

Questions families here ask at interview

  • Do you live in Gustine, Newman or Los Banos, and what is your plan on a day your car will not start?
  • Would you book the Micro Bus with my mother, or drive her yourself, for appointments on Fifth Street?
  • Can you speak Spanish with her and with her clinic staff when needed?
  • Are you already an IHSS provider, and would you enroll with Merced County if she is approved for hours?
  • What did you do for your last client in the first week after a hospital stay, at Memorial Hospital Los Banos or elsewhere?
  • How do you log medications, and how would you let us know about a change?
  • If my father says no to a shower or pushes lunch away, what do you try next?
Schedules and cost

What in-home care costs in Gustine: hourly rates and schedules

Short daily visits. A morning block for bathing, breakfast and medications, or a late-afternoon visit for dinner and evening routines, suits a parent who lives alone. Appointment days. Add a longer shift when there is a clinic visit, and agree up front on mileage if the caregiver drives. Cover for commuting families. The city describes itself as a bedroom community for the Bay Area, and workers here average 34.4 minutes each way (ACS 2020–2024), so some families book weekday cover from early morning to evening while they are at work.

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

Hire directly and you are the employer: pay at least the state's $16.90 (UC Berkeley's inventory shows no Gustine wage law) and, for a personal attendant, 1.5 times the rate on any hours past nine in a day or 45 in a week. Compare that with $16.50, the median for employed aides across the Merced metro, and with the $17.50 Merced County IHSS wage. If your parent lives on the Newman side of the county line, Stanislaus County IHSS pays $18.75 from July 2026 instead. For a parent with Medi-Cal, apply for IHSS first; the Merced County IHSS guide explains how, and county-approved hours could pay the caregiver you choose.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.

Questions

Hiring a caregiver in Gustine: frequently asked questions

Is there assisted living in Gustine?

Not in the CDSS licensing file from May 2025, where the only Gustine elder care home, a six-bed home, is listed as closed. Families wanting help in Gustine usually arrange it at home, through IHSS, a private caregiver, or both.

Can IHSS pay for my father's caregiver in Gustine?

If he has a Medi-Cal eligibility determination and needs help to stay home safely, he can apply to Merced County IHSS. Approved hours are paid at $17.50 to a provider he picks, who can be a relative.

My mother lives in Newman. Does this page apply?

Partly. Newman is in Stanislaus County, so its IHSS office and rate ($18.75 from July 2026) apply. Post with her Newman ZIP code so the right county applies; the Newman page has the Stanislaus details.
