Finding in-home caregiver jobs in San Luis Obispo

Two numbers explain this city. Census survey data (ACS 2020–2024) give a median age of just 26.3, and 15,890 residents are enrolled in college or graduate school; Cal Poly is in the city, and RTA Route 12 runs to Cuesta College. Yet 14.9% of residents are 65 or older, 1,085 are past 85, and in 2,334 homes a person aged 65-plus lives by themselves. Those older residents, many wanting to stay in their own homes, are who most private care here is for. Requests from ZIP codes 93401 and 93405 appear above as families publish them.

If you are a student fitting shifts around classes, say exactly which mornings, evenings or holiday periods you can cover, including academic breaks; families value a schedule they can count on. San Luis Obispo is compact (the mean commute is 16.1 minutes and 6.1% of workers walk to their jobs), and 6.8% of households have no vehicle, so mention whether you have a car for trips to Sierra Vista on Murray Avenue or French Hospital on Johnson Avenue. Spanish leads the other home languages, used by 10.7% of residents aged five-plus.

Pay

Caregiver pay in San Luis Obispo: how much caregivers make

Public figures first, then what they mean for private work. Statistics describe employed aides across the San Luis Obispo–Paso Robles, CA metro (San Luis Obispo County); private rates on CaregiverConnect are agreed between each caregiver and family and are not tracked by any agency.

Who is the employer. A family that hires you directly is your employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

The city council has never set its own wage floor; Berkeley's Labor Center, which tracks local ordinances statewide, lists nothing for San Luis Obispo, so $16.90 is the legal minimum. BLS wage data here describe the entire county: half of its 4,160 personal care and home health aides made under $16.50 an hour in May 2025, and just one in ten topped $20.69. Against that, the county's $21.40 IHSS rate stands out, and it is a fair opening figure for private, hands-on work. Rents push the other way on your budget: median gross rent in the city is $1,965, and 63.5% of renting households pay 30% or more of income for housing (ACS 2020–2024). Nursing assistants in the metro, who need CDPH certification, had a median of $22.52.

How the public numbers relate to private rates, and what affects them, is covered in the caregiver pay guide.

Rules

Caregiver requirements in California, applied to San Luis Obispo

If a San Luis Obispo family hires you itself for help that is not medical, California asks for no license. Through an agency it changes: licensed home care organizations can only place aides who hold a current listing on the state registry ($35, renewed every two years), and you may also list yourself as an independent. To be paid through IHSS, contact the county's IHSS Public Authority on (805) 474-2055 or online; after a staff member calls you, you finish orientation videos and forms in an online portal, get Live Scan fingerprints using the form from your enrollment packet, and show up at a scheduled group check-in with photo identification and the original card bearing your Social Security number. The county's social services office in the city is at 3433 South Higuera Street, (805) 781-1600. California law obliges you to report signs that an older or dependent adult is being harmed; call (805) 781-1790, or (844) 729-8011 after hours. Read becoming an IHSS provider for the full sequence, or our statewide rules guide.

One in four households (25.2%) includes someone 65 or older, and a third of residents past 65 (34.0%) live with a disability. Just 1.0% of workers commute by public transit.

Questions

Caregiver jobs in San Luis Obispo: frequently asked questions

Can I do caregiving around classes at Cal Poly or Cuesta?

Yes, if you are clear about it. Families plan around reliable hours, so list the exact days and times you can commit to each term and say what happens during finals and breaks. A part-time profile that is honest about its limits gets more replies than one that overpromises.

Is there a San Luis Obispo city minimum wage?

No. San Luis Obispo has no local ordinance on Berkeley's statewide list, so private and agency employers in town go by California's $16.90, in force from January 1, 2026.

What do IHSS providers earn in San Luis Obispo?

San Luis Obispo County pays IHSS providers $21.40 per hour, a rate set January 1, 2026. The Public Authority also lists 40 hours of paid sick leave for fiscal year 2025/26 and optional representation by UDW, the Home Care Providers Union.

Where is the IHSS office in the city?

County Social Services has an office at 3433 South Higuera Street, (805) 781-1600, with walk-in hours from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays and the last hour by appointment. Provider enrollment itself starts with a call to the Public Authority on (805) 474-2055.

Which hospitals send patients home needing help?

Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center and French Hospital Medical Center are both in the city. Experience with discharge routines from either one, such as wound checks, walkers or new medications, is worth naming in your profile.

Where do San Luis Obispo families post?
