Caregiver costs in Carlsbad, CA

Carlsbad shares a county and a federal statistical area with San Diego, but not San Diego’s minimum wage. A caregiver working in a Carlsbad home is covered by the California rate, which changes the floor for every budget on this page. Below are the local pay rules, the regional reference wages, the IHSS rate, agency prices and North County costs such as paratransit, all from public sources checked on 31 October 2026.

Rates caregivers list on CaregiverConnect near Carlsbad

Carlsbad has no city minimum wage: the state rate applies

The City of San Diego’s minimum wage ordinance reaches only work done inside San Diego city limits. The City spells out that work sites elsewhere in the county, beyond its own boundaries, fall under California's statewide minimum wage and earned sick leave law. Carlsbad is a separate city, and it is missing from the July 2026 edition of the UC Berkeley Labor Center’s inventory of local minimum wages in California. So the floor for a caregiver working in Carlsbad is the state rate: $16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026 (Department of Industrial Relations).

That is 85 cents an hour less than the $17.75 the same caregiver must be paid for work in the City of San Diego. On a 40-hour week the difference is $34.00, or about $147 a month (40 × $0.85 × 52 ÷ 12, illustrative). Individual caregivers set their own rates, so a lower legal floor does not mean a lower quote.

Sick leave follows state law too: a yearly allowance of at least 40 paid sick hours or five days (DIR), rather than the City of San Diego’s accrual and cap rules.

What Carlsbad shares with San Diego

Some figures are regional and identical for Carlsbad and San Diego. Kept in their three groups:

  • Private hire reference (employed workers). The OEWS survey treats Carlsbad as part of the San Diego-Chula Vista-Carlsbad MSA. There, the 51,760 home health and personal care aides earned $17.33 at the median and $18.05 on average, and nursing assistants $23.05 at the median, in early 2025 (EDD OEWS, first-quarter release). These are wages paid by agencies and other employers across the metro area; no Carlsbad-only figure exists.
  • Agency price. CareScout’s 2025 survey gives a California median of $40 an hour for a non-medical caregiver from an agency. It publishes no North County or San Diego figure.
  • Program wage. San Diego County IHSS pays individual providers $20.40 an hour from 1 March 2026 (CDSS). The county rate is the same in Carlsbad as anywhere else in the county.

What independent caregivers ask in Carlsbad is not surveyed by anyone. Look at the live summary just under the introduction for rates caregivers on CaregiverConnect have posted around Carlsbad, and whether enough have done so to summarize.

Carlsbad budgets: part-time, full-time and weekend live-in

Illustrative calculations only. The first rate column is the $16.90 state floor; the second uses the $20.40 county IHSS wage purely as an example of a higher private rate. Monthly = weekly × 52 ÷ 12.

Pattern of care$16.90 floorExample $20.40
Mornings: Monday to Friday, 4 hours each (20 hours)$338.00 for the week; near $1,465 for the month$408.00 for the week; $1,768 for the month
Day care while family works: five 8-hour days (40 hours)$676.00 for the week; near $2,929 for the month$816.00 for the week; $3,536 for the month
Weekend relief, staying over: Saturday and Sunday, 9 hours worked each day (18 hours)$304.20 for the week; near $1,318 for the month$367.20 for the week; near $1,591 for the month

The rows are set up to stay clear of overtime under every rule that could apply. They assume a personal attendant in DIR's sense, employed to supervise, dress and feed your relative and spending under one-fifth of the time on other jobs; for that role the Domestic Worker Bill of Rights starts overtime only once a single day runs past nine hours, or the week past 45 (DIR FAQ). Forty-five is not the line for every caregiver, though. Federal law, 29 U.S.C. 207(l), makes the 41st hour of a household worker’s week an overtime hour, and the federal regulations extend that to any domestic employee not living in the home (29 CFR 552.100). A caregiver doing mostly housework falls under Wage Order 15 instead: a live-out worker of that type earns overtime from the ninth hour of a day or the 41st of a week, and double pay from the thirteenth hour of a day. None of the rows exceeds eight hours on any day or forty in the week except the weekend days, which reach 9 hours and so fit only the personal attendant assumption. If the weekend stay counts as a live-in arrangement, Wage Order 15 also requires 12 consecutive off-duty hours in each 24, with 3 more off duty inside the 12-hour working span. Calling on the caregiver during those periods costs time and a half.

One federal exemption can matter to a family: if the work is companionship, meaning fellowship and protection with hands-on care at no more than 20% of the weekly hours, an individual or family employer owes neither the federal minimum wage nor federal overtime for it (29 U.S.C. 213(a)(15), 29 CFR 552.6), while an agency cannot claim it (29 CFR 552.109). California's own minimum wage and overtime rules still apply to the job.

For scale, the 40-hour week through an agency at the $40 California median would be $1,600, about $6,933 a month. If you hire directly, budget for the employer half of FICA, 7.65%, which kicks in once your 2026 cash payments to a household employee total $3,000 (IRS Topic 756). At the floor on 40 hours, that comes to about $51.71 weekly.

North County costs families forget

  • Transport to appointments. North County Transit District runs LIFT, a curb-to-curb ADA paratransit service for certified riders in areas within ¾ mile of a BREEZE bus route or SPRINTER rail station. A one-way trip costs $6, or $60 for a book of ten. Certified riders get a free Paratransit ID card; when the card shows “PCA: Y”, a personal care attendant rides free on BREEZE, SPRINTER, COASTER and LIFT. A reservationist will say if an address is outside the service area. Agree in advance whether you pay the caregiver’s mileage for car trips instead.
  • The nearest IHSS office. The county lists IHSS offices in El Cajon, Escondido, National City, Oceanside and two in San Diego. For Carlsbad families the North County choices are Oceanside, 3708 Ocean Ranch Boulevard, Ste 320, Oceanside 92056, and Escondido, 649 W. Mission Avenue, Ste 5, Escondido 92025. You can also apply by phone at (800) 339-4661.
  • State payroll registration. The EDD expects a household employer to sign up within 15 days once a quarter’s cash wages hit $750. SDI comes out of pay from that point, and from $1,000 in a quarter you add Unemployment Insurance and Employment Training Tax. Board and lodging are not counted.
  • Room and board for a live-in. A room can offset part of the minimum wage provided you and the caregiver put a voluntary agreement in writing before the job begins. MW-2026 caps the weekly credit at $79.46 for a private room and $65.59 for a shared one.

What makes a Carlsbad caregiver quote higher or lower

  • Personal care versus housekeeping. California’s Labor Commissioner treats feeding, bathing, dressing and supervision as personal attendant work, and making beds, cleaning, cooking and laundry as other household work. Once the second kind exceeds 20% of the time, the caregiver is not a personal attendant and the overtime thresholds drop to 8 hours a day and 40 a week for a live-out worker, with double time past 12 hours in a day.
  • Certification. The $23.05 nursing assistant median against the $17.33 aide median in this MSA (EDD OEWS, first quarter of 2025) gives a sense of the premium employers pay for CNA training.
  • Weekend and holiday shifts. For weekend-only work like the relief row above, ask whether the rate differs from weekdays or on public holidays, and write the answer into your agreement.
  • Distance. If the caregiver lives elsewhere in the county, travel time is a cost to them. Ask at the interview whether they set a minimum shift length.
