What you can post

Types of in-home care families in Imperial Beach arrange

All non-medical. For nursing tasks (injections, wound care, catheters) you need a licensed home health agency, not a private caregiver.

  • Senior care at home: meals, reminders, housekeeping, errands, company.
  • Personal care: bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, transfers.
  • Companion care: conversation, walks, appointments, errands.
  • Dementia care: routine-based support; ask for experience.
  • Respite care: shifts so a family caregiver can rest or work.
  • Overnight and live-in: night supervision or room-and-board arrangements.
  • Post-surgery recovery: non-medical help after a hospital stay.
  • Part-time and flexible: a few hours on set days is the usual start.
Choosing well

Evaluating caregivers in Imperial Beach

Because Imperial Beach has no licensed home-care agency on the May 2025 CDSS file, you are more likely to be comparing independents, and the checks are yours to run. Ask whether the caregiver is on the state Home Care Aide Registry (voluntary for independents), enrolled with IHSS through the National City Public Authority (so a Department of Justice fingerprint check has been passed), or CNA-certified by CDPH, and verify it. Call two previous families, interview at home with your parent present, have a consumer-reporting agency run a background check once the caregiver signs consent, and agree paid trial shifts first. CaregiverConnect does not screen anyone; a Verified badge only records that a caregiver uploaded proof we looked at.

Questions families here ask at interview

  • Where are you coming from, and how do you get here: Route 901 along the Strand, 933 or 934, or by car?
  • Would you drive my father to Scripps Mercy or Sharp Chula Vista and wait, and what do you charge for that?
  • Do you speak Spanish with the people you care for?
  • Have you helped a couple where one partner is the main carer, and how did you fit in?
  • Which credentials do you hold: registry listing, IHSS enrolment or CNA?
  • Could you take my mother to the senior centre lunch on 8th Street a few days a week?
  • What is your rate, and what would an overnight cost?
Schedules and cost

Typical schedules and what care costs in Imperial Beach

Imperial Beach families usually post weekday blocks for companionship, meals and errands, help when a spouse can no longer manage alone, respite, and a few weeks of recovery after a hospital stay. Overnights come up for dementia; live-in is rare.

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

Imperial Beach has no pay data of its own; the figures are for the San Diego metro. Private rates here usually land between the $20.40 county IHSS wage and the $40 California agency median, with driving to appointments outside the city priced in. The state minimum of $16.90 applies in Imperial Beach (the City of San Diego's $17.75 does not). If your parent has Medi-Cal, IHSS can pay a caregiver you choose. Household-employer taxes and the state's personal-attendant overtime rule (daily after nine hours, weekly after 45) apply when you hire directly.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.
