How to find a caregiver in South Bay San Diego

The South Bay is the easiest part of the county to hire in. A large group of the platform's caregivers live in National City, western Chula Vista and San Ysidro, distances are short (National City is 7 road miles from downtown, Chula Vista 14, Imperial Beach 13, Coronado 5), and the Blue Line lets caregivers without a car reach homes near its stations. The applicants you will meet are mostly Spanish-speaking, often Tagalog-speaking (12.2% of National City residents speak Tagalog at home, 5.5% in Chula Vista), and many already hold an IHSS case, which means they have been through the Public Authority's fingerprint check. Post the care need with your ZIP code, the hours and the language you want used with your relative; the cards above show who is available nearest first across a 40-mile radius.

Coronado and the eastern Chula Vista neighborhoods are the exception: fewer caregivers live there, and applicants commute from the west. Say whether parking is available and whether you will pay for the drive.

What you can post

Types of in-home care families in South Bay San Diego arrange

All non-medical. For nursing tasks (injections, wound care, catheters) you need a licensed home health agency, not a private caregiver.

  • Senior care at home: meals, reminders, housekeeping, errands, company.
  • Personal care: bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, transfers.
  • Companion care: conversation, walks, appointments, errands.
  • Dementia care: routine-based support; ask for experience.
  • Respite care: shifts so a family caregiver can rest or work.
  • Overnight and live-in: night supervision or room-and-board arrangements.
  • Post-surgery recovery: non-medical help after a hospital stay.
  • Part-time and flexible: a few hours on set days is the usual start.
Choosing well

Evaluating caregivers in South Bay San Diego

Three things can be checked before you meet anyone. An IHSS provider number means the caregiver completed enrolment at the Public Authority on Mile of Cars Way: SOC 426, a Live Scan fingerprint check, an online session and a signed provider agreement; ask to see the ID badge. A Home Care Aide Registry listing, voluntary for independents and compulsory for the aides of Chula Vista's 17 licensed agencies, can be searched on the CDSS site. A CNA certificate from CDPH, often earned at Southwestern College's Otay Mesa centre, is verifiable online too. Then interview in person with your relative present and in the language they will use, phone two previous families, run a consumer-reporting background check with written consent, and pay for trial shifts before fixing a schedule. CaregiverConnect does not run checks; a Verified badge shows only that a caregiver uploaded proof of one.

Questions families here ask at interview

  • Which language will you use with my mother when I am not in the room?
  • Are you enrolled with IHSS, and do you have the Public Authority badge?
  • Where do you live, and how long will it take you to reach us at 7 am?
  • Would you drive my father to Sharp Chula Vista, Scripps Mercy on H Street or Paradise Valley, and how do you charge for waiting time?
  • Have you cared for someone with diabetes, dementia or after a stroke?
  • Can you cover an overnight or a weekend if the family member who usually does is away?
  • If you also work an IHSS case, which hours are already taken?
  • What is your rate, and what changes it?
Schedules and cost

Typical schedules and what care costs in South Bay San Diego

What South Bay families post. Many households are multigenerational with everyone working days, so the common posting is a weekday daytime block for a grandparent who speaks Spanish or Tagalog, with help bathing, cooking and getting to appointments. Overnight and weekend requests come from families where the usual carer is a working adult child. Discharges from Sharp Chula Vista, Scripps Mercy Chula Vista and Paradise Valley create short, intense postings; the South Bay Rehabilitation Center at Paradise Valley and the skilled nursing units at Sharp Chula Vista and Villa Coronado are the step-down options. Coronado postings skew older and longer: full weekday coverage with driving for a parent in their eighties or nineties.

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

Because the Public Authority is here and so many local caregivers work for it, $20.40 is the number South Bay caregivers compare your offer with; private rates above it and below the $40 agency median are the norm, with less of a travel premium than in North County. San Ysidro and Otay Mesa are inside the City of San Diego ($17.75 minimum wage); the four cities use $16.90. Median household incomes range from $66,841 in National City to $134,534 in Coronado; if your relative qualifies, apply for IHSS at the county office in Suite 210 of the Public Authority building and the county pays the caregiver you choose for the authorised hours. Household-employer taxes and overtime after nine hours a day apply to privately paid hours.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.

Safety

Hiring safely in South Bay San Diego

Write the arrangement down in the language both of you read: duties, hours, rate, overtime, mileage, notice and emergency contacts, with a weekly signed timesheet. If the caregiver also holds an IHSS case for your relative, keep the privately paid hours separate from the authorised ones. Lock away documents, cards and medication, and set bank alerts. Report suspected abuse or neglect to Adult Protective Services through (800) 339-4661, any hour. The hiring guide explains screening, taxes and overtime.

How to find and hire a caregiver in South Bay San Diego

CaregiverConnect is a marketplace, not an agency: you hire the caregiver directly, which is why there is no agency mark-up on their hourly rate. That also means screening is your responsibility, and we tell you how.

Questions

Hiring a caregiver in South Bay San Diego: frequently asked questions

Can I find a Spanish- or Tagalog-speaking caregiver in the South Bay?

Yes; both are common on local profiles because roughly half of Chula Vista and National City residents speak Spanish at home and Tagalog is National City's second language. State the language in the posting and interview in it.

How do I get my parent's caregiver paid through IHSS?

Apply through the county: call (800) 339-4661 or visit 401 Mile of Cars Way, Suite 210, National City. If your parent is 65 or older, blind or disabled and on full-scope Medi-Cal, a social worker assesses hours and the caregiver you name enrols at the Public Authority in Suite 200.

What does a caregiver cost in Chula Vista or National City?

Between the $20.40 IHSS wage and the $40 agency median an hour for private hours, with a lower travel premium than elsewhere in the county. Caregivers list their own rates on their profiles.

Is hiring different in Coronado?

Fewer caregivers live on the Coronado side of the bridge, so applicants commute and may ask for parking or a drive allowance; postings are more often full weekday days with driving for an older parent.

Where can my relative go after a hospital stay if home is not ready?

Sharp Chula Vista and Villa Coronado run skilled nursing, Paradise Valley runs the South Bay Rehabilitation Center, and the four cities have 38 licensed residential care facilities; the county Long-Term Care Ombudsman handles concerns about any of them.

What is free on CaregiverConnect?

Posting, browsing and receiving applications. Family Premium ($24.99 a month, cancel any time) adds messaging and confirming a hire; the caregiver's pay is untouched.
