Finding caregiver jobs in South Bay San Diego
The South Bay is compact: Chula Vista, National City, Imperial Beach and Coronado, with the City of San Diego's San Ysidro and Otay Mesa neighborhoods filling the gap to the border. National City is 7 road miles from downtown, Chula Vista 14, Imperial Beach 13, San Ysidro 15 and Coronado 5 across the bridge, so a caregiver based anywhere in the region can reach every posting here in under half an hour outside rush hour. Postings come from a 40-mile radius, which also pulls in the city and East County; filter by the city on each card if you want to stay south of State Route 54.
This is the one region where the platform's caregiver pool is as deep as the demand, so profiles compete. What wins is specific: the languages you speak with the client (46.8% of Chula Vista and 51.5% of National City residents speak Spanish at home; Tagalog is spoken by 12.2% in National City), whether you are enrolled with IHSS, whether you will take San Ysidro and Otay Mesa postings, and whether you can drive to Sharp Chula Vista, Scripps Mercy Chula Vista or Paradise Valley Hospital. If you commute from Tijuana, say what time you usually clear the border.

Household help and companionship are the realistic entry points without a certificate.

Caregiver pay in South Bay San Diego
Public figures first, then what they mean for private work. Statistics describe employed aides across the San Diego–Chula Vista–Carlsbad, CA metro (San Diego County); private rates on CaregiverConnect are agreed between each caregiver and family and are not tracked by any agency.
| Measure | Hourly | Source and coverage |
|---|---|---|
| Home health and personal care aides, San Diego–Chula Vista–Carlsbad, CA metro (San Diego County) | $16.97 median ($17.71 mean) | BLS OEWS, May 2025; 57,080 jobs; concentration 1.34× national |
| IHSS provider wage, San Diego County | $20.40 | CDSS; effective March 1, 2026 |
| California minimum wage | $16.90 | effective January 1, 2026 |
| Nursing assistants, San Diego–Chula Vista–Carlsbad, CA metro (San Diego County) | $23.11 median | BLS OEWS, May 2025 (certified roles, for comparison) |
Who is the employer. A family that hires you directly is your employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.
San Diego County projection: 52,820 aide jobs in 2023 to 69,580 in 2033 (+31.7%), about 105,890 openings over the decade including replacements (California EDD, 2023–2033 projections). Openings are not the same as net new jobs.
IHSS sets the floor here more than anywhere else in the county: the Public Authority that employs the county's 44,000-plus providers is on Mile of Cars Way in National City, and $20.40 is the figure local caregivers measure private offers against. Private rates sit above it, and the three hospitals plus 38 licensed residential care facilities and 23 home care agencies in the four cities compete for the same CNAs. Two cautions: San Ysidro and Otay Mesa are inside the City of San Diego, where the minimum wage is $17.75, while the four cities use the state's $16.90; and median household incomes range from $66,841 in National City to $108,032 in Chula Vista and $134,534 in Coronado, which shapes what families can pay privately.
IHSS wages for every county we cover, with effective dates, are in the IHSS pay by county guide.
How the public numbers relate to private rates, and what affects them, is covered in the caregiver pay guide.
Caregiver requirements in California, applied to South Bay San Diego
Everything a county caregiver might need to enrol in is within a few miles. The IHSS Public Authority at 401 Mile of Cars Way, Suite 200, National City, handles provider enrolment: the SOC 426 packet, an in-person appointment with a $47 Live Scan, an online video session and the SOC 846 agreement; the county's own IHSS office is in Suite 210 of the same building. A caregiver hired privately for non-medical care needs no licence and may join the Home Care Aide Registry voluntarily ($35); the registry is compulsory only for aides of licensed agencies, of which Chula Vista has 17 and Coronado four on the May 2025 CDSS file. CNA certificates come from CDPH after a state-approved course; Southwestern College's programme at the Otay Mesa Higher Education Center is the local one, and Sharp Chula Vista and Sharp Coronado both run skilled nursing units. Elder-abuse reporting is mandatory; the county line is (800) 339-4661. The requirements guide has the full picture.
