Finding caregiver jobs in San Diego County

San Diego County is where CaregiverConnect has its deepest pool of families and caregivers, and the postings on this page come from a 60-mile radius that reaches all 18 incorporated cities and the unincorporated communities between them. By road it is 54 miles from downtown to Fallbrook, 15 to San Ysidro and 86 to Borrego Springs, so nobody works all of it. Caregivers think in three regions, which match the county's own HHSA service regions: North County (North Coastal and North Inland), the South Bay (the South region: Chula Vista, National City, Imperial Beach, Coronado, San Ysidro and Otay Mesa) and East County (La Mesa, El Cajon, Santee and the communities along Interstate 8). Central San Diego has its own city page.

Most of the platform's caregivers live in central San Diego, the South Bay and East County; North County profiles are thinner, so a posting in Oceanside draws fewer rivals than one in La Mesa. Set a radius you will actually drive at 8 am (15 miles keeps you in one region, 25 crosses into the next), list your languages, tick every care type and switch on alerts.

Pay

Caregiver pay in San Diego County

Public figures first, then what they mean for private work. Statistics describe employed aides across the San Diego–Chula Vista–Carlsbad, CA metro (San Diego County); private rates on CaregiverConnect are agreed between each caregiver and family and are not tracked by any agency.

MeasureHourlySource and coverage
Home health and personal care aides, San Diego–Chula Vista–Carlsbad, CA metro (San Diego County)$16.97 median ($17.71 mean)BLS OEWS, May 2025; 57,080 jobs; concentration 1.34× national
IHSS provider wage, San Diego County$20.40CDSS; effective March 1, 2026
California minimum wage$16.90effective January 1, 2026
Nursing assistants, San Diego–Chula Vista–Carlsbad, CA metro (San Diego County)$23.11 medianBLS OEWS, May 2025 (certified roles, for comparison)

Who is the employer. A family that hires you directly is your employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

San Diego County projection: 52,820 aide jobs in 2023 to 69,580 in 2033 (+31.7%), about 105,890 openings over the decade including replacements (California EDD, 2023–2033 projections). Openings are not the same as net new jobs.

Four reference points apply across the county: the $16.97 employed median for aides, the $20.40 IHSS wage earned by over 44,000 county providers, the $23.11 nursing-assistant median, and the City of San Diego's $17.75 minimum wage, which applies only inside city limits (the other 17 cities and the unincorporated area use the state's $16.90). Private rates are set per family and in practice sit above the IHSS wage, with more for nights, dementia care and driving. Health care and social assistance employment grew 5.0% in the year to August 2026, and nursing and residential care facilities alone employ 32,300 people, so agencies and facilities compete with private families for the same workers.

IHSS wages for every county we cover, with effective dates, are in the IHSS pay by county guide.

How the public numbers relate to private rates, and what affects them, is covered in the caregiver pay guide.

Rules

Caregiver requirements in California, applied to San Diego County

The rules are California's; the county supplies the offices. IHSS providers enrol through the Public Authority in National City (SOC 426 and 426A, a $47 Live Scan fingerprint check, an online video session and the SOC 846 agreement), and county IHSS offices in El Cajon, Escondido, National City, Oceanside and two in San Diego take forms near home. Aides employed by one of the county's 230 licensed Home Care Organizations must be on the state Home Care Aide Registry; a caregiver hired directly by a family for non-medical care needs no licence and may register voluntarily for $35. CNAs trained at Southwestern, MiraCosta, the Grossmont Health Occupations Center or SDCCE are certified by CDPH and staff the 581 licensed residential care facilities. Everyone is a mandated reporter; the AIS call centre takes abuse reports at (800) 339-4661 around the clock. Details in the requirements guide.
