Finding caregiver jobs in La Mesa

La Mesa is the East County city closest to San Diego, wedged between San Diego, Lemon Grove, Spring Valley and El Cajon, and it is one of the places caregivers on CaregiverConnect most often name as home. That cuts both ways: families here have a real pool of nearby applicants, and a caregiver based here can take postings from downtown San Diego to Santee with a 15-mile radius. Sharp Grossmont Hospital, with 562 beds the largest in East County, sits on Grossmont Center Drive inside the city, and a large share of the care needs posted in the surrounding ZIP codes begin with a discharge from it.

Searches for work here are mostly the plain "caregiver jobs in La Mesa CA", and the families behind them are usually looking for daytime help for a parent in one of the city's single-family neighbourhoods, or for someone who can visit a relative in one of the city's 21 licensed residential care homes. Say in your profile which of those you have done, and whether you can work the early-morning block that follows a hospital discharge.

Transit is better here than anywhere else in East County: the Orange Line serves Grossmont Transit Center, La Mesa Boulevard and Spring Street, with downtown San Diego about 30 minutes away. A caregiver who can reach a client's home from one of those stations should say so, because many La Mesa clients live within walking distance of them.

Types of caregiver jobs

Types of caregiver jobs in La Mesa

La Mesa postings lean toward post-hospital recovery, dementia care and companionship for a parent who has lived in the same house for decades, plus respite for adult children in the area. Households with someone 65 or over are 26.7% of the total. Companionship, meals and errands remain the entry point for a caregiver without a certificate; recovery and dementia work goes to applicants who can describe what they have handled.

  • Senior caregiving: day-to-day help so an older adult can stay at home.
  • Personal care: bathing, dressing, grooming, transfers.
  • Companion care: company, errands, appointments, light help.
  • Dementia care: routine-based support for memory loss.
  • Respite care: cover so a family caregiver can rest or work.
  • Live-in: room and board as part of the arrangement.
  • Overnight: supervision through the night.
  • Part-time and full-time: set by day and time block on your profile.
Pay

Caregiver pay in La Mesa

Public figures first, then what they mean for private work. Statistics describe employed aides across the San Diego–Chula Vista–Carlsbad, CA metro (San Diego County); private rates on CaregiverConnect are agreed between each caregiver and family and are not tracked by any agency.

MeasureHourlySource and coverage
Home health and personal care aides, San Diego–Chula Vista–Carlsbad, CA metro (San Diego County)$16.97 median ($17.71 mean)BLS OEWS, May 2025; 57,080 jobs; concentration 1.34× national
IHSS provider wage, San Diego County$20.40CDSS; effective March 1, 2026
California minimum wage$16.90effective January 1, 2026
Nursing assistants, San Diego–Chula Vista–Carlsbad, CA metro (San Diego County)$23.11 medianBLS OEWS, May 2025 (certified roles, for comparison)

Who is the employer. A family that hires you directly is your employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

San Diego County projection: 52,820 aide jobs in 2023 to 69,580 in 2033 (+31.7%), about 105,890 openings over the decade including replacements (California EDD, 2023–2033 projections). Openings are not the same as net new jobs.

These are county figures. The City of San Diego's $17.75 ordinance stops at that city's boundary, so in La Mesa the floor is the state rate of $16.90 even though the boundary is only a short walk from some La Mesa streets. Competition for caregivers is unusually dense: 13 licensed home-care agencies are based in La Mesa on the May 2025 CDSS file, the most of any East County city, and the 21 residential care facilities hold 1,008 beds. That pushes private rates above the $16.97 employed median, and the $23.11 nursing-assistant median shows what a CNA certificate adds. Median household income is $95,028, so most families here can pay a fair private rate without IHSS.

IHSS wages for every county we cover, with effective dates, are in the IHSS pay by county guide.

How the public numbers relate to private rates, and what affects them, is covered in the caregiver pay guide.

Rules

Caregiver requirements in California, applied to La Mesa

Nothing in La Mesa changes the state rules, but the mix of employers makes it worth knowing which rule applies to which job. Hired directly by a family for non-medical help: no licence, and Home Care Aide Registry listing is optional ($35, Live Scan). Working for one of the 13 licensed agencies in the city: registry listing with a CDSS background check, TB clearance and entry-level training is compulsory. Working in one of the 21 residential care facilities: facility rules under Community Care Licensing, and usually a CNA for the larger ones. IHSS cases are enrolled through the county Public Authority in National City ((866) 351-7722) with fingerprints and orientation. Sharp Grossmont itself hires CNAs certified by the California Department of Public Health, which is outside this marketplace. Everyone caring for an older adult is a mandated reporter; Aging & Independence Services takes reports at (800) 339-4661. See the requirements guide.

The area

La Mesa in numbers

La Mesa had 61,707 residents on 1 January 2026 (Department of Finance E-1). The ACS 2020–2024 estimates put 15.5% of residents at 65 or older, about 1,300 at 85 or older, and the median age at 37.4. 24.0% speak a language other than English at home (14.0% Spanish), and 74.1% of those speak English very well, so bilingual skills matter less here than in El Cajon or Spring Valley. Housing is expensive for a caregiver's wage: the median owner-occupied home is valued at $812,000 and median gross rent is $2,049, with 47.7% of households owning. The mean commute is 23.8 minutes, the shortest of the East County cities.

The city's care infrastructure is dense for its size: one large hospital, 13 licensed home-care agencies and 21 residential care facilities with 1,008 beds, four of them 50 beds or more. For a caregiver that means plenty of facility and agency work to build experience, and private families who are used to paying for care. Questions

Caregiver jobs in La Mesa: frequently asked questions

Does Sharp Grossmont post jobs on CaregiverConnect?

No; the hospital employs its own staff. What you will see here are families whose relative has just left Sharp Grossmont and needs help at home for a few weeks or longer.

Is La Mesa a good base for a caregiver without a car?

The best in East County: three Orange Line stations and a short ride to downtown. Tell families which stations you can reach and how far you will walk from them.

How do La Mesa rates compare with the city of San Diego?

The pay table is the same county data for both. The City of San Diego's $17.75 minimum wage does not reach La Mesa; here the $16.90 state rate is the floor and $20.40 IHSS is the usual reference.

Where is the nearest CNA class?

The Health Occupations Center in Santee, reachable by trolley via El Cajon Transit Center and the Copper Line. Grossmont College in El Cajon offers degree nursing, not CNA.

Do agencies in La Mesa pay better than private families?

Agencies bill around the $40 statewide median and pay aides a fraction of it; private families agree a rate with you directly. Thirteen licensed agencies are based in the city, which keeps private rates competitive.

Where do La Mesa families post?

On the La Mesa families page, alongside anonymised cards for caregivers nearby.
