How to find an in-home caregiver in Modoc County

Only about a third of Modoc County's 8,467 residents live in Alturas, and the rest are spread across the Big Valley, Canby, Likely and Surprise Valley communities. Distance is the first thing to plan around. A request in Alturas reaches caregivers who live in and around town. A request in Cedarville or Fort Bidwell is a different market: the Surprise Valley health district describes people from elsewhere in the county making the trip over Cedar Pass to reach it, and a caregiver based in Alturas would have to make that drive for every shift. Say how remote the home is, and offer mileage or longer shifts.

Expect your caregiver to arrive by car. In ACS 2020–2024, two-thirds of the county's workers drove alone and none commuted by transit. ACS finds 86.0% of residents five and older speak only English at home and 10.1% speak Spanish, so mention it if your parent prefers Spanish. The caregiver list on this page sorts the nearest profiles first and grows as caregivers join.

What you can post

Types of in-home care families in Modoc County arrange

All non-medical. For nursing tasks (injections, wound care, catheters) you need a licensed home health agency, not a private caregiver.

  • Senior care at home: meals, reminders, housekeeping, errands, company.
  • Personal care: bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, transfers.
  • Companion care: conversation, walks, appointments, errands.
  • Dementia care: routine-based support; ask for experience.
  • Respite care: shifts so a family caregiver can rest or work.
  • Overnight and live-in: night supervision or room-and-board arrangements.
  • Post-surgery recovery: non-medical help after a hospital stay.
  • Part-time and flexible: a few hours on set days is the usual start.

Evaluating caregivers in Modoc County

Ask each applicant to show you what they hold. Anyone already working as a Modoc County IHSS provider has gone through the Public Authority process at T.E.A.C.H., Inc.: enrollment videos, signed SOC 426 and SOC 846 forms, a Department of Justice Live Scan and an in-person orientation. Applicants on the Public Authority's registry were also interviewed and had their references checked. Aides who work at the hospital nursing homes need a CDPH nurse assistant certificate; employees of licensed home care agencies must be on the state Home Care Aide Registry, which is optional for independents. The rest is up to you: call two past employers and pay for a trial visit first. CaregiverConnect does not check identities, licenses or records, and any background report you buy needs the applicant's written consent.

Questions families here ask at interview

  • How far do you live from our home, and will you still come when the roads are bad?
  • Have you cared for anyone after a swing-bed stay at Modoc Medical Center or a stay in a nursing unit?
  • Are you already an IHSS provider through the Modoc Public Authority, or would you be willing to enroll?
  • Could you ride with my father on a Sage Stage trip to Reno or Klamath Falls for a specialist visit?
  • My mother lives in Surprise Valley. Do you live on that side of Cedar Pass?
  • Have you worked with someone who has dementia, and how did you handle wandering at night?
Schedules and cost

What in-home care costs in Modoc County: hourly rates and schedules

In and around Alturas. Short morning and evening visits for getting up, meals and medications, plus a ride to the clinic or the Tuesday and Thursday senior lunch. Out in the valleys. Two or three long days a week rather than daily calls, so the drive is worth it for the caregiver. Trips out of county. A full day on set bus days when a parent sees a specialist in Reno, Redding or Klamath Falls.

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

Setting a private rate starts with California's $16.90 minimum, which applies across Modoc because UC Berkeley's inventory lists no local wage ordinance here. Aides in the ten-county BLS area that includes Modoc earned a $16.50 median in May 2025, Modoc County pays IHSS providers $17.75, and CareScout found a $40 hourly median for agency home care statewide in 2025. CDPH lists no licensed home health agency or hospice based in the county, so agency care may be hard to arrange. A directly hired personal attendant earns time-and-a-half after nine hours of work in one day or more than 45 in one week; budget mileage too. If your parent has Medi-Cal, ask Social Services about IHSS before you decide on private hours.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.

Questions

Hiring a caregiver in Modoc County: frequently asked questions

How does my parent apply for IHSS in Modoc County?

Contact Modoc County Social Services at 120 N Main Street in Alturas, (530) 233-6501. CDSS requires IHSS applicants to be California residents living at home with a Medi-Cal eligibility determination; a county social worker then assesses how many hours of help are needed.

Can a family member be paid to provide the care?

Often, yes. Under IHSS the recipient picks the provider, and that can be a relative. The relative enrolls through the Public Authority at T.E.A.C.H., Inc., (530) 233-3111, and Modoc County pays $17.75 an hour for authorized hours.

Is there a home health agency in Modoc County?

The state CDPH facility list for September 2026 shows none with a Modoc County address. Ask the Modoc Medical Center discharge planner or your doctor which outside agencies will serve your area, and consider a privately hired caregiver for daily non-medical help.

Who can help us sort out Medicare or a nursing home problem?

PSA 2 offers free HICAP Medicare counseling on (530) 223-0999, and its long-term care ombudsman, (530) 229-1435, handles concerns about nursing homes and care facilities, including the units in Alturas and Cedarville.

Does CaregiverConnect screen the caregivers?

No. We do not run background, license or reference checks; families make those checks themselves. Posting a request is free, and Family Premium at $24.99 a month lets you message caregivers and confirm a hire.

Will a caregiver come out to Fort Bidwell or Lake City?

Look first among caregivers who live in Surprise Valley, since the alternative is a long drive over Cedar Pass. Give the ZIP code, describe the road, and offer longer shifts or mileage.
