Finding in-home caregiver jobs in Modoc County
The Department of Finance estimated 8,467 residents on January 1, 2026, and 2,769 of them in Alturas, which the regional Area Agency on Aging describes as the county's largest city. Its county profile gives Modoc 4,203 square miles, about 2.4 people per square mile, with Oregon to the north and Nevada to the east. Two in three residents live outside Alturas.
That shapes caregiving work in two ways. First, plan on driving. ACS 2020–2024 finds that 66.0% of the county's workers drove alone, 12.5% carpooled and 11.9% worked from home, while the survey counted no one commuting by public transit; the average trip to work took 22.5 minutes. Second, the county splits into separate service areas. Surprise Valley's health district says patients from the rest of the county reach its Cedarville hospital by crossing Cedar Pass, and the Modoc Medical Center ambulance covers about 4,500 square miles, part of Lassen County included. On your profile, name the valleys you will drive to and say whether you can take full-day shifts.

Types of caregiver jobs in Modoc County
Work in Modoc falls into three groups. IHSS pays a provider chosen by an approved client, often a relative or neighbor, for the hours the county authorizes. Both hospital districts hire for their nursing homes: Modoc Medical Center lists certified nurse assistant posts, full time or per diem, and a student nursing assistant opening, and Surprise Valley lists CNA, LVN and RN vacancies. Private families ask for help after a hospital or swing-bed stay, company for a parent living alone, and a companion on trips to specialists. New caregivers can start with meals and errands.
- Senior caregiving: day-to-day help so an older adult can stay at home.
- Personal care: bathing, dressing, grooming, transfers.
- Companion care: company, errands, appointments, light help.
- Dementia care: routine-based support for memory loss.
- Respite care: cover so a family caregiver can rest or work.
- Live-in: room and board as part of the arrangement.
- Overnight: supervision through the night.
- Part-time and full-time: set by day and time block on your profile.

Who is the employer. A family that hires you directly is your employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.
BLS publishes no separate wage figures for Modoc County. Its May 2025 survey places the county in a ten-county nonmetropolitan area along with Colusa, Glenn, Lassen, Nevada, Plumas, Sierra, Siskiyou, Tehama and Trinity, where 5,000 home health and personal care aides earned a $16.50 median and a $17.00 mean. Nursing assistants there had a $22.66 median. CDSS lists $17.75 an hour for Modoc County IHSS providers from January 1, 2026, which is 85 cents over the $16.90 state minimum. UC Berkeley's inventory shows no local minimum wage in Modoc, so the state rate is the floor for private work, and a family that employs you directly owes time-and-a-half past nine hours in a day or 45 in a week.
