Finding in-home caregiver jobs in Siskiyou County
Siskiyou County is large and thinly settled. The Area Agency on Aging that serves it puts the county at 6,347 square miles with roughly 7 people per square mile, and the Department of Finance counted 43,153 residents on January 1, 2026. The College of the Siskiyous lists city or town halls in Dorris, Dunsmuir, Etna, Fort Jones, Montague, Mount Shasta, Tulelake, Weed and Yreka, and notes that the largest towns sit along Interstate 5. Away from that corridor, some clients live where the county bus calls only twice a week.
That shapes how you look for work. Expect to drive: ACS 2020–2024 finds 72.4% of employed residents driving to work by themselves and 0.5% riding transit. List every community you can reach on a normal day, and say whether you can drive a client to the county's two hospitals, Fairchild in Yreka and Mercy in Mount Shasta. Residents 65 and older are 27.8% of the county in the same survey, against 15.7% statewide, and many of them want to keep living in their own homes for as long as they can.

Types of caregiver jobs in Siskiyou County
The county's IHSS page lists what the program pays for: personal care such as bathing and dressing, paramedical tasks under a licensed professional's direction, housework, cooking, shopping, laundry and rides to medical appointments. It will not pay for companionship, pet care, gardening or waiting at the doctor's office, and that gap is often what private families hire for. Without experience, start with meals, errands and company.
- Senior caregiving: day-to-day help so an older adult can stay at home.
- Personal care: bathing, dressing, grooming, transfers.
- Companion care: company, errands, appointments, light help.
- Dementia care: routine-based support for memory loss.
- Respite care: cover so a family caregiver can rest or work.
- Live-in: room and board as part of the arrangement.
- Overnight: supervision through the night.
- Part-time and full-time: set by day and time block on your profile.
Caregiver pay in Siskiyou County: how much caregivers make
Public figures first, then what they mean for private work. Statistics describe employed aides across the North Valley-Northern Mountains Region of California nonmetropolitan area (Siskiyou and nine other counties); private rates on CaregiverConnect are agreed between each caregiver and family and are not tracked by any agency.
| Measure | Hourly | Source and coverage |
|---|---|---|
| Home health and personal care aides, North Valley-Northern Mountains Region of California nonmetropolitan area (Siskiyou and nine other counties) | $16.50 median ($17.00 mean) | BLS OEWS, May 2025; 5,000 jobs; concentration 1.73× national |
| IHSS provider wage, Siskiyou County | $16.90 | CDSS; effective September 1, 2026 |
| California minimum wage | $16.90 | effective January 1, 2026 |
| Nursing assistants, North Valley-Northern Mountains Region of California nonmetropolitan area (Siskiyou and nine other counties) | $22.66 median | BLS OEWS, May 2025 (certified roles, for comparison) |
Who is the employer. A family that hires you directly is your employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.
BLS publishes no separate wage table for Siskiyou County. It pools Siskiyou with Trinity, Tehama, Sierra, Plumas, Nevada, Modoc, Lassen, Glenn and Colusa. The May 2025 survey counted 5,000 aides across those ten counties, paid a $16.50 median ($17.00 mean), while nursing assistants earned a $22.66 median. The CDSS table lists Siskiyou County's IHSS provider wage as $16.90 from September 1, 2026, which is exactly California's minimum wage and the lowest of the 58 county rates in that table. No Siskiyou city or county ordinance appears in UC Berkeley's minimum wage inventory, so private jobs start at that same $16.90; overtime starts once a day passes nine hours or a week passes 45.
About 7.6% of Siskiyou County's labor force was unemployed, on average, between August 2025 and August 2026, according to EDD estimates. Over the same months the statewide figure was 5.3%, Weed's 11.4% and Yreka's 7.3%. Care work does not stop when other jobs slow down, which is why steady hours through IHSS in Siskiyou County matter in a county this size. Because the IHSS wage sits at the minimum, a CNA certificate is the clearest route to higher pay.
How to enroll as a provider in Siskiyou County, with the office phone lines and orientation steps, is in the IHSS Siskiyou County guide. IHSS wages for every county we cover, with effective dates, are in the IHSS pay by county guide.
How the public numbers relate to private rates, and what affects them, is covered in the caregiver pay guide.
Caregiver requirements in California, applied to Siskiyou County
California issues no license for private, non-medical home care, so a Siskiyou family can hire you as you are; only licensed agencies must put their aides on the Home Care Aide Registry. Siskiyou County Adult Services runs IHSS from 750 South Main Street, Yreka, (530) 841-4010. Provider enrollment goes through the IHSS Public Authority, by appointment at 1107 Ream Avenue in Mt. Shasta or 818 South Main Street in Yreka: the SOC 426, 426C and 847 forms, a Live Scan you pay for, then orientation once the Justice Department result is back. Facility jobs need a CDPH nurse assistant certificate, and every care provider is a mandated reporter of elder abuse. See California caregiver requirements.
