Finding in-home caregiver jobs in Del Norte County
State demographers counted 26,339 people countywide for January 1, 2026, 19,932 of whom live outside city limits. Crescent City holds the other 6,407, along with nearly every service a caregiver deals with: the county Social Services office on Northcrest Drive, Sutter Coast Hospital on East Washington Boulevard, the county's single skilled nursing facility and the senior center. Sutter Health calls its hospital the only one in this rural region and says it serves Curry County, Oregon, as well as Del Norte.
Outside town, Redwood Coast Transit's fare zones name the communities you will hear about: Smith River, Gasquet and Hiouchi, and Klamath. A profile that lists the ones you will drive to, and says whether you will take a client to Crescent City appointments, does more work than one naming a single town. In ACS 2020–2024, 65.9% of the county's workers drove alone and the average commute was 19.6 minutes; 8.2% of households have no vehicle, and those clients need a caregiver who drives.

Caregiver pay in Del Norte County: how much caregivers make
Public figures first, then what they mean for private work. Statistics describe employed aides across the North Coast Region of California nonmetropolitan area (Del Norte, Humboldt, Lake and Mendocino counties); private rates on CaregiverConnect are agreed between each caregiver and family and are not tracked by any agency.
| Measure | Hourly | Source and coverage |
|---|---|---|
| Home health and personal care aides, North Coast Region of California nonmetropolitan area (Del Norte, Humboldt, Lake and Mendocino counties) | $16.74 median ($17.16 mean) | BLS OEWS, May 2025; 10,140 jobs; concentration 3.34× national |
| IHSS provider wage, Del Norte County | $19.50 | CDSS; effective September 1, 2026 |
| California minimum wage | $16.90 | effective January 1, 2026 |
| Nursing assistants, North Coast Region of California nonmetropolitan area (Del Norte, Humboldt, Lake and Mendocino counties) | $23.12 median | BLS OEWS, May 2025 (certified roles, for comparison) |
Who is the employer. A family that hires you directly is your employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.
BLS has no Del Norte-only wage table. Its North Coast nonmetropolitan area joins the county with Humboldt, Lake and Mendocino; its May 2025 survey found 10,140 aides in this occupation, paid $16.74 at the median and $17.16 on average, with nursing assistants at a $23.12 median. Del Norte's IHSS rate is higher than either aide figure: $19.50 an hour from September 1, 2026, which is $2.60 above California's $16.90 minimum. No Del Norte ordinance appears in UC Berkeley's local wage inventory; private work therefore starts at the state rate, and a household employer owes time and a half beyond nine hours daily or 45 weekly.
About 6.4% of Del Norte County's labor force was unemployed, on average, between August 2025 and August 2026, according to EDD estimates, compared with 5.3% for California; in Crescent City the figure was 8.4%. Where jobs are this scarce, an IHSS provider position paid at the county rate is one of the steadier local incomes; the Del Norte County IHSS guide explains how to get on the registry.
How to enroll as a provider in Del Norte County, with the office phone lines and orientation steps, is in the IHSS Del Norte County guide. IHSS wages for every county we cover, with effective dates, are in the IHSS pay by county guide.
How the public numbers relate to private rates, and what affects them, is covered in the caregiver pay guide.
Caregiver requirements in California, applied to Del Norte County
Direct-hire, non-medical work needs no state license; only agency employees must join the $35 Home Care Aide Registry. The Social Services Branch of the county's Department of Health & Human Services administers IHSS from 880 Northcrest Drive, Crescent City, phone (707) 464-3191. The county keeps a Public Authority registry of caregiver providers and hands eligible clients a list from it; a client may also choose a friend or relative. CDSS lists four enrollment steps for every provider: the SOC 426 form (identity is checked in person against photo ID and a Social Security card), a fingerprint background check you pay for, a county orientation, and the SOC 846 agreement, all within 90 days. Facility jobs generally require a CDPH nurse assistant certificate, and paid caregivers must report suspected elder abuse. Statewide rules: California caregiver requirements.

Del Norte County in numbers
One caution before the numbers: Pelican Bay State Prison, which CDCR places in Crescent City, puts a large share of county residents in group quarters (2,370 in ACS 2020–2024), so the census shows 115.5 males for every 100 females and understates the share of older adults. ACS counts 5,552 residents aged 65 and over, 358 of them 85 or older, and 42.6% of the county's 9,522 households include someone 65-plus; 10.2% of households are a woman of 65 or older living alone. Among civilian residents 65 and over, 39.2% report a disability.
In CDPH's licensed facility file (data date September 16, 2026) the county has one general hospital, Sutter Coast (49 beds), one skilled nursing facility, Crescent City Care Center (99 beds), a home health agency and two hospices, all in Crescent City. Clinics include Open Door's Del Norte Community Health Center and United Indian Health Services sites in Crescent City, Smith River and Klamath. For city detail see the Crescent City page; Humboldt County, in the same BLS wage area, has its own county page.
