How to find an in-home caregiver in Del Norte County

About three in four county residents live outside Crescent City: the Department of Finance counted 19,932 in unincorporated areas and 6,407 within city limits on January 1, 2026. Caregivers who live in or near Crescent City can reach a home in town easily. For a house in Gasquet or past Klamath, you will usually do better offering fewer, longer shifts than short daily visits, or paying mileage. Spell out in the post if driving is part of the job: trips to Sutter Coast Hospital, a clinic or the senior center.

English is the home language for most households here; in the 2020–2024 ACS, Spanish is spoken at home by 8.7% of residents past their fifth birthday, and 3.0% use Spanish with limited English. If your relative prefers Spanish, lead the post with that. The same survey counts 10.7% of the county as American Indian or Alaska Native, by itself or in combination, and United Indian Health Services runs clinics in Crescent City, Smith River and Klamath; if your parent is a patient there, mention it so applicants know where appointments are. Caregiver profiles lower on this page start with whoever lives closest to your ZIP, and the list changes as people register.

What you can post

Types of in-home care families in Del Norte County arrange

All non-medical. For nursing tasks (injections, wound care, catheters) you need a licensed home health agency, not a private caregiver.

  • Senior care at home: meals, reminders, housekeeping, errands, company.
  • Personal care: bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, transfers.
  • Companion care: conversation, walks, appointments, errands.
  • Dementia care: routine-based support; ask for experience.
  • Respite care: shifts so a family caregiver can rest or work.
  • Overnight and live-in: night supervision or room-and-board arrangements.
  • Post-surgery recovery: non-medical help after a hospital stay.
  • Part-time and flexible: a few hours on set days is the usual start.
Choosing well

Evaluating caregivers in Del Norte County

Start by asking what each applicant can document. A Del Norte County IHSS provider has finished the state enrollment steps: the SOC 426 form, a fingerprint background check, a county orientation and a signed SOC 846 agreement. An agency aide needs a Home Care Aide Registry listing with the state; an independent may or may not have one, so ask. Then phone at least two former employers, have your parent sit down with the two or three you like best, and pay one of them for a trial shift before settling a schedule. Nobody at CaregiverConnect verifies identity, licensing or criminal history. A background report is something you would order yourself, with the applicant's written consent.

Questions families here ask at interview

  • Which part of the county do you live in, and how many minutes is it to our door?
  • What did a client of yours need in the first weeks home from Sutter Coast Hospital?
  • Do you already work as a Del Norte IHSS provider, or have you joined the Public Authority registry?
  • Could you ride with my mother on the Redwood Coast Transit medical shuttle to Medford or Grants Pass on a Tuesday or Thursday?
  • If my father misses his Dial-A-Ride pickup, would you drive him yourself, and does your auto insurance cover that?
  • Do you know the drop-in caregiver group at the Del Norte Senior Center, in case our family needs a break?
Schedules and cost

What in-home care costs in Del Norte County: hourly rates and schedules

In Crescent City. A morning call to get your parent up, bathed and fed, a supper and medication visit later on, and an occasional ride to Northcrest Drive or East Washington Boulevard. Medical travel days. A full day for a trip to a specialist in Oregon or Eureka on the transit shuttle. Smith River, Gasquet and Klamath. A few long shifts each week work better than daily drop-ins, since every trip out costs the caregiver time and fuel.

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

No city or county wage ordinance appears for Del Norte in UC Berkeley's inventory, so $16.90, the state minimum, is the floor. Across the four-county North Coast nonmetro area, BLS reports a $16.74 median for employed aides. Del Norte County pays IHSS providers $19.50 from September 1, 2026, and caregivers will compare your offer with that. Agency care costs far more: $40 an hour is the California median in CareScout's 2025 figures. Employ the caregiver yourself and California's domestic worker rules add overtime pay for long days and long weeks; the DIR FAQ gives the thresholds. The county lists Medi-Cal as an IHSS eligibility requirement, so if your parent has it, call (707) 464-3191 before you budget; the county may authorize IHSS hours toward the care.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.
