Finding in-home caregiver jobs in Weed
The City of Weed describes itself as a historic community at the western foothills of Mount Shasta, shaped by timber. It takes its name from Abner Weed, who bought the Siskiyou Lumber and Mercantile Mill and about 280 acres in 1897, and it became a city on January 25, 1961. The mill drew workers from Italy, Mexico and Southeast Asia, which is why streets carry names such as Rome, Venice and Genoa. The city also records two disasters: the Boles Fire of September 2014, which destroyed or damaged more than 200 structures, and the 2022 Mill Fire in the Lincoln Heights neighborhood. The Department of Finance counted 2,693 residents on January 1, 2026.
Weed is a young town by Siskiyou standards. Half of Weed's residents are younger than 36.0 in ACS 2020–2024, against 47.2 for the county, and 375 residents were attending college or graduate school; the college in town offers on-campus housing in two student lodges. Only 14.3% of residents are 65 or older (392 people), so there are fewer older households to serve than in Yreka. What sets a Weed profile apart is reach: say you will cover Lake Shastina, Mount Shasta and Dunsmuir as well as town, and put Spanish on the profile if you have it: 14.0% of Weed residents over age four use it at home.

Types of caregiver jobs in Weed
Three kinds of work fit Weed. Shasta Healthcare, the skilled nursing facility at 445 Park Street, is licensed for 59 beds in the state list and is the obvious first employer for a newly certified nurse assistant. IHSS pays whichever provider an approved client chooses, for the hours the county authorizes. And private families hire for what IHSS does not cover, such as company and supervision for a parent living alone.

Caregiver pay in Weed: how much caregivers make
Public figures first, then what they mean for private work. Statistics describe employed aides across the North Valley-Northern Mountains Region of California nonmetropolitan area (includes Siskiyou County); private rates on CaregiverConnect are agreed between each caregiver and family and are not tracked by any agency.
| Measure | Hourly | Source and coverage |
|---|---|---|
| Home health and personal care aides, North Valley-Northern Mountains Region of California nonmetropolitan area (includes Siskiyou County) | $16.50 median ($17.00 mean) | BLS OEWS, May 2025; 5,000 jobs; concentration 1.73× national |
| IHSS provider wage, Siskiyou County | $16.90 | CDSS; effective September 1, 2026 |
| California minimum wage | $16.90 | effective January 1, 2026 |
| Nursing assistants, North Valley-Northern Mountains Region of California nonmetropolitan area (includes Siskiyou County) | $22.66 median | BLS OEWS, May 2025 (certified roles, for comparison) |
Who is the employer. A family that hires you directly is your employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.
About 11.4% of Weed's labor force was unemployed, on average, between August 2025 and August 2026, according to EDD estimates, well over the county average of 7.6% and the state's 5.3%; even the best month in that stretch was 9.7%. Household incomes are modest too: ACS puts Weed's median at $38,854, and 30.1% of residents 65 and over had incomes below the poverty line, a figure with a wide margin in a town this small. Care work does not rise and fall with timber or tourism, two industries the city names in its own history, which is why a regular IHSS client is worth having here; see how IHSS works in Siskiyou County. The county IHSS wage is $16.90, the same as the state minimum, and UC Berkeley's inventory lists no Weed ordinance above it. Certified nursing assistants in the same BLS area have a $22.66 median wage, so certification is the step that lifts pay.
How to enroll as a provider in Siskiyou County, with the office phone lines and orientation steps, is in the IHSS Siskiyou County guide. IHSS wages for every county we cover, with effective dates, are in the IHSS pay by county guide.
How the public numbers relate to private rates, and what affects them, is covered in the caregiver pay guide.
Caregiver requirements in California, applied to Weed
Weed has no caregiving rules of its own. Families can hire you for non-medical help without any license, and Home Care Aide Registry listing is required only when a licensed agency puts you on its payroll. For IHSS, the Public Authority offers enrollment appointments in Mt. Shasta and Yreka, and the Adult Services office that authorizes hours is in Yreka; the steps are on the Siskiyou County page. A job at Shasta Healthcare requires a CDPH nurse assistant certificate. Note that the college's CNA classes meet at its Yreka campus, not in Weed, although you register through Counseling on the Weed campus. If you are paid to look after an elder, state law makes you a mandated abuse reporter. Statewide detail: California caregiver requirements.
