How to find an in-home caregiver in Plumas County
Hiring help at home in this county is mostly a question of distance. Only 2,087 of the 18,471 residents live in Portola, the one incorporated city, and everyone else lives in unincorporated towns such as Quincy, Chester, Greenville and Graeagle or in the country around them. A caregiver who lives near your parent is worth more than one with a longer resume who faces a long drive each way. Say in the post which community the home is in and whether the job includes driving.
Expect a small pool and plan for it. ACS 2020–2024 counts 6,114 county residents aged 65 or over, 31.5% of the population, and about 1,510 households made up of one older person living alone. English is the only home language for more than nine in ten residents. Profiles nearest your ZIP code are listed first on this page.

Types of in-home care families in Plumas County arrange
All non-medical. For nursing tasks (injections, wound care, catheters) you need a licensed home health agency, not a private caregiver.
- Senior care at home: meals, reminders, housekeeping, errands, company.
- Personal care: bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, transfers.
- Companion care: conversation, walks, appointments, errands.
- Dementia care: routine-based support; ask for experience.
- Respite care: shifts so a family caregiver can rest or work.
- Overnight and live-in: night supervision or room-and-board arrangements.
- Post-surgery recovery: non-medical help after a hospital stay.
- Part-time and flexible: a few hours on set days is the usual start.
Evaluating caregivers in Plumas County
Credentials vary, so confirm each one. An IHSS provider in Plumas County has gone through state enrollment: a Department of Justice fingerprint check, a county orientation and a signed provider agreement. Nursing assistants are certified by CDPH, and Feather River College in Quincy trains them. The Home Care Aide Registry applies to agency staff, and the state's licensing file shows no licensed home care agency based in the county, so expect most applicants to be independent. Phone two former employers, introduce your parent to the two strongest candidates, and book one paid trial before committing to regular days. Nobody at CaregiverConnect confirms who an applicant is or what record they have; a background report is something your family arranges, with the person's signed permission.
Questions families here ask at interview
- Which community are you based in, and what is your winter drive to us like?
- Who have you looked after following discharge from Plumas District Hospital, Seneca or Eastern Plumas Health Care?
- Are you already enrolled as a Plumas County IHSS provider, or willing to enroll if my mother is approved?
- Would you take my father to appointments in Quincy, Chester or Portola, and is your car insured for it?
- Can you book a Plumas Transit or senior transportation ride for him and go along?
- Have you helped someone with dementia who lives alone, and how did you keep them safe between visits?
What in-home care costs in Plumas County: hourly rates and schedules
In town. In Portola, Quincy or Chester, a morning visit for bathing, breakfast and medications and a late-afternoon visit for supper is common. Rural homes. Two or three long days a week often work better than daily short calls, because each trip is a long drive. After a hospital or nursing-unit stay. Expect to need extended hours, perhaps nights, during the first stretch at home, then fewer as strength returns.
| Reference point | Hourly | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Employed aides, North Valley-Northern Mountains nonmetro area (includes Plumas County) | $16.50 median | BLS OEWS, May 2025 |
| IHSS provider wage, Plumas County | $18.50 | CDSS; effective January 1, 2026 |
| California minimum wage | $16.90 | effective January 1, 2026 |
| Agency non-medical home care, California median (CareScout 2025) | $40.00 | CareScout Cost of Care Survey 2025 |
Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.
Before you name a private wage, compare four benchmarks. California's minimum is $16.90 an hour, and no Plumas town has a higher local rate in UC Berkeley's ordinance list. BLS reports a $16.50 median for aides employed in the ten-county nonmetro area that includes Plumas. IHSS pays Plumas County providers $18.50. CareScout's 2025 survey found a $40 median hourly rate for agency home care statewide, though the licensing file shows no home care agency based in this county. If you employ a personal attendant directly, you owe one and a half times the rate past nine hours in a day or 45 in a week. Eligibility for IHSS depends on Medi-Cal, so if your parent has Medi-Cal, call Social Services on (530) 283-6350 before you budget; county-paid hours may cover part of the care.
No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.
