How to find an in-home caregiver in Santa Barbara
When you hire privately in Santa Barbara, the job is yours to define: hours, duties and pay, and the checking too. Santa Barbara has not adopted a local minimum wage, so California's $16.90 applies. The caregivers who see your request first are those closest to the address, usually elsewhere on the South Coast. In your post, say whether the home is near an MTD stop and where a caregiver can park.
Think about language too. In the ACS 2020–2024, 31.2% of city residents five and older speak a non-English language at home, Spanish for most of them, and 39.3% of the city's Spanish speakers told the census their English is not very strong. If your father prefers Spanish, make that the first line of the post. Whenever caregivers near your ZIP code sign up, their profiles are added below; look again later in the week.

Evaluating caregivers in Santa Barbara
Ask for proof of what each applicant says they hold. Anyone working as an IHSS provider in this county has finished county enrollment, background check included, and anyone the IHSS Public Authority refers has passed that office's screening as well. Every aide a licensed agency sends out must be a registered California home care aide; for independents, registering is optional. CNAs are certified by CDPH, and SBCC trains them at its Wake Campus on Turnpike Road. Your own checks still matter most: call two references, talk with the candidate while your parent joins in, and book one paid trial shift first. CaregiverConnect does no screening of any kind; a background report, ordered with the caregiver's written consent, is your decision.

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.
The legal floor in Santa Barbara is the state minimum, $16.90. BLS reported a $16.50 median for home care aides across the county in May 2025, before that minimum took effect, while county IHSS providers earn $20.07, and CareScout's 2025 survey shows agencies statewide charging a $40 median for non-medical care. A direct hire typically falls somewhere between the IHSS and agency figures. Local costs push in one direction: the city's median gross rent of $2,413 is higher than the county's, and caregivers who live nearby will price that in. Under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights, a personal attendant whose day runs over nine hours, or whose week tops 45, earns 1.5 times the normal rate for the extra time.
No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.
