Finding in-home caregiver jobs in Santa Barbara

The Department of Finance counted 85,083 people in the city of Santa Barbara on January 1, 2026, and the ACS 2020–2024 puts 20.6% of them at 65 or older, against 16.6% for the county. There are 3,173 residents aged 85 and up, and 5,328 one-person households headed by someone 65 or older. That is the client base for private care here: older adults who want to stay in their own homes, plus adult children who live elsewhere and need someone dependable nearby. Requests come from across the city's ZIP codes, from 93101 downtown to 93111 on the Goleta side.

Six in ten homes in the city are rented (60.1%), so expect to work in apartments and small cottages as often as in houses, and ask about stairs and parking before your first shift. Getting around is easier than in much of the county: the average commute is 17.3 minutes, and MTD buses run across the South Coast. After English, Spanish is the city's most common home language: 25.1% of residents aged five or more use it. If you speak Spanish, or any other language, lead your profile with it, and list the neighborhoods and nearby towns you can reach.

Pay

Caregiver pay in Santa Barbara: how much caregivers make

Public figures first, then what they mean for private work. Statistics describe employed aides across the Santa Maria–Santa Barbara, CA metro (Santa Barbara County); private rates on CaregiverConnect are agreed between each caregiver and family and are not tracked by any agency.

MeasureHourlySource and coverage
Home health and personal care aides, Santa Maria–Santa Barbara, CA metro (Santa Barbara County)$16.50 median ($17.77 mean)BLS OEWS, May 2025; 6,470 jobs
IHSS provider wage, Santa Barbara County$20.07CDSS; effective April 1, 2026
California minimum wage$16.90effective January 1, 2026
Nursing assistants, Santa Maria–Santa Barbara, CA metro (Santa Barbara County)$22.66 medianBLS OEWS, May 2025 (certified roles, for comparison)

Who is the employer. A family that hires you directly is your employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

Santa Barbara has no minimum wage of its own; it is missing from the list of California cities with local wage laws kept by UC Berkeley's Labor Center (July 2026 edition), so employers here follow the state's $16.90. The BLS figures cover the whole county, Santa Maria included, and the $16.50 aide median dates from May 2025, before the state increase. County IHSS pays $20.07 an hour, and nursing assistants in the metro had a $22.66 median. Housing costs are the other side of the ledger: median gross rent in the city is $2,413, above the county's $2,131, which is worth keeping in mind when you set a private rate.

How to enroll as a provider in Santa Barbara County, with the office phone lines and orientation steps, is in the IHSS Santa Barbara County guide. IHSS wages for every county we cover, with effective dates, are in the IHSS pay by county guide.

How the public numbers relate to private rates, and what affects them, is covered in the caregiver pay guide.

Rules

Caregiver requirements in California, applied to Santa Barbara

You need no state license to be paid directly by a Santa Barbara family for companionship, meals, errands or personal care that is not medical. Agencies that hold a state license have to enroll their aides in the Home Care Aide Registry, a $35 fee covering two years, and you can sign up independently too. To work as an IHSS provider, enroll through Santa Barbara County DSS, whose South Coast IHSS office is at 234 Camino Del Remedio (93110); the county lists online enrollment, an in-person appointment, a background check and payroll registration as the steps. The IHSS Public Authority on (866) 313-1353 runs the registry that introduces providers to recipients. Aide jobs in hospitals and nursing homes require a CDPH nursing assistant certificate. Caregivers are mandated reporters of suspected abuse, and county APS answers (844) 751-6729 day and night.
