Finding in-home caregiver jobs in Santa Barbara County

Santa Barbara County works as two labor markets joined by Highway 101. The South Coast runs along the ocean from Carpinteria through the city of Santa Barbara and Montecito to Goleta. North County sits on the other side of the Santa Ynez Mountains: Buellton and Solvang in the Santa Ynez Valley, Lompoc to the west, and Santa Maria with Guadalupe and Orcutt up near the San Luis Obispo line. The county keeps an IHSS office in each of the three population centers, on Camino del Remedio in Santa Barbara, West Laurel Avenue in Lompoc and West Carmen Lane in Santa Maria, which is a fair guide to how caregivers split the territory. Most caregivers pick one side of the mountains and build their week there.

Set your profile up the same way. Name the ZIP code you leave from, the farthest town you will drive to, and whether you depend on a bus. Spanish is a real advantage here: per ACS 2020–2024, 40.5% of county residents aged five or more use some language other than English at home, and Spanish speakers make up 33.4% of that age group. If you can work in Spanish, open your profile with it.

Types of caregiver jobs

Types of caregiver jobs in Santa Barbara County

Typical requests across the county are for morning help with bathing and dressing, companions and drivers for medical appointments, overnight cover after surgery, and steady weekday hours for someone living with dementia. Live-in arrangements come up too, and they make most sense for clients in the outlying valleys, where a daily drive over the mountains is long. Newcomers tend to begin with company, shopping, meals and tidying.

  • Senior caregiving: day-to-day help so an older adult can stay at home.
  • Personal care: bathing, dressing, grooming, transfers.
  • Companion care: company, errands, appointments, light help.
  • Dementia care: routine-based support for memory loss.
  • Respite care: cover so a family caregiver can rest or work.
  • Live-in: room and board as part of the arrangement.
  • Overnight: supervision through the night.
  • Part-time and full-time: set by day and time block on your profile.
Pay

Caregiver pay in Santa Barbara County: how much caregivers make

Public figures first, then what they mean for private work. Statistics describe employed aides across the Santa Maria–Santa Barbara, CA metro (Santa Barbara County); private rates on CaregiverConnect are agreed between each caregiver and family and are not tracked by any agency.

MeasureHourlySource and coverage
Home health and personal care aides, Santa Maria–Santa Barbara, CA metro (Santa Barbara County)$16.50 median ($17.77 mean)BLS OEWS, May 2025; 6,470 jobs
IHSS provider wage, Santa Barbara County$20.07CDSS; effective April 1, 2026
California minimum wage$16.90effective January 1, 2026
Nursing assistants, Santa Maria–Santa Barbara, CA metro (Santa Barbara County)$22.66 medianBLS OEWS, May 2025 (certified roles, for comparison)

Who is the employer. A family that hires you directly is your employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

The May 2025 OEWS survey counted 6,470 people employed as home health or personal care aides in the metro BLS calls Santa Maria–Santa Barbara: about 32 for every 1,000 jobs, with half paying under $16.50 an hour and an average of $17.77. The survey predates the January 2026 rise in the state minimum to $16.90. Santa Barbara County cities are absent from UC Berkeley's 2026 tables of California wage ordinances, which leaves the state rate as the legal minimum everywhere from Carpinteria to Santa Maria. A better yardstick is IHSS: the CDSS county table lists $20.07 an hour for Santa Barbara County providers from April 1, 2026. Nursing assistants in the same metro earned a $22.66 median, which shows what a CDPH certificate can add.

How to enroll as a provider in Santa Barbara County, with the office phone lines and orientation steps, is in the IHSS Santa Barbara County guide. IHSS wages for every county we cover, with effective dates, are in the IHSS pay by county guide.

How the public numbers relate to private rates, and what affects them, is covered in the caregiver pay guide.

Rules

Caregiver requirements in California, applied to Santa Barbara County

Private, non-medical work for a household requires no state license in Santa Barbara County. If a licensed home care agency employs you, it has to register you with the state's aide registry ($35, valid two years); independent caregivers can opt in. IHSS work goes through the county Department of Social Services, which breaks new-provider enrollment into five tabs, from the online application and an in-person appointment through the background check to payroll registration. The registry that matches recipients with screened caregivers belongs to the IHSS Public Authority (866-313-1353, open 8 to 4 on weekdays). Working as an aide in a hospital or skilled nursing facility takes CDPH certification as a nursing assistant. You are also a mandated reporter: county APS answers (844) 751-6729 around the clock. Read the IHSS guide for Santa Barbara County for each step and the statewide requirements guide for everything else.
