Finding in-home caregiver jobs in Ventura County
Ventura County is really three or four labor markets that happen to share a county line. On the coast, the Oxnard Plain takes in Oxnard, Camarillo, Port Hueneme and most of Ventura, and Gold Coast Transit buses tie those cities together. Inland, the Conejo Valley (Thousand Oaks, including Newbury Park), Simi Valley and Moorpark make up the east county, which shares a border and a bus network with Los Angeles County. Santa Paula and Fillmore sit in the Santa Clara River Valley, served by VCTC's Highway 126 route, and Ojai has a valley of its own. More than half the county's area is national forest, so nearly everyone lives in a handful of valleys and on the plain.
That geography should shape your profile. Enter the ZIP code you start from and a radius you will really drive. Somebody in Oxnard who sets a wide radius is promising daily trips inland to Thousand Oaks; somebody in Simi Valley with the same radius is promising the plain. Say whether you have a car, which side of the county you prefer, and your languages. Countywide, 30.2% of people aged five and up use Spanish at home (ACS 2020–2024), and the share is about twice that in Oxnard.

Types of caregiver jobs in Ventura County
Postings in this county tend to ask for weekday hands-on care for an aging mother or father, recovery help after Community Memorial, Ventura County Medical Center, St. John's or Los Robles, watchful company for a person living with dementia, and a weekly break for the husband or wife who carries the load. Without paid experience, start with companionship, meals, errands and light housekeeping; lifting, showering and dementia work are normally offered to people with a track record or a nursing assistant certificate.

- Personal care: bathing, dressing, grooming, transfers.

- Part-time and full-time: set by day and time block on your profile.
Caregiver pay in Ventura County: how much caregivers make
Public figures first, then what they mean for private work. Statistics describe employed aides across the Oxnard–Thousand Oaks–Ventura, CA metro (Ventura County); private rates on CaregiverConnect are agreed between each caregiver and family and are not tracked by any agency.
| Measure | Hourly | Source and coverage |
|---|---|---|
| Home health and personal care aides, Oxnard–Thousand Oaks–Ventura, CA metro (Ventura County) | $16.50 median ($17.88 mean) | BLS OEWS, May 2025; 15,250 jobs; concentration 1.7× national |
| IHSS provider wage, Ventura County | $20.97 | CDSS; effective July 1, 2026 |
| California minimum wage | $16.90 | effective January 1, 2026 |
| Nursing assistants, Oxnard–Thousand Oaks–Ventura, CA metro (Ventura County) | $22.50 median | BLS OEWS, May 2025 (certified roles, for comparison) |
Who is the employer. A family that hires you directly is your employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.
The BLS metro covers exactly this county, so the figures here are local: 15,250 home health and personal care aides, a $16.50 median and a $17.88 mean in May 2025, with nursing assistants at a $22.50 median. The $20.97 IHSS rate, which the county Public Authority negotiates with SEIU Local 2015, is well above the aide median and is the strongest local benchmark for private work. None of the ten cities has its own wage ordinance in the Labor Center's tracking at UC Berkeley, which leaves California's $16.90 as the floor from Ojai to Thousand Oaks.
How to enroll as a provider in Ventura County, with the office phone lines and orientation steps, is in the IHSS Ventura County guide. IHSS wages for every county we cover, with effective dates, are in the IHSS pay by county guide.
How the public numbers relate to private rates, and what affects them, is covered in the caregiver pay guide.
Caregiver requirements in California, applied to Ventura County
Non-medical help paid for by a household needs no state license. Registry listing is compulsory only for aides employed by licensed agencies; as an independent you may join for $35, renewed every two years. To be paid through IHSS, you work with the Ventura County Human Services Agency and its IHSS Public Authority on Market Street in Ventura or North Madera Road in Simi Valley: an orientation (a separate session for family and friend providers), enrollment forms, a government ID with your original Social Security card, and a criminal background check with Live Scan fingerprints whose fee IHSS does not cover. Registry applicants also complete a phone interview with the Public Authority. Hospital and nursing-home roles ask for CDPH nursing assistant certification. Ventura County Adult Protective Services answers 805-654-3200 at any hour. State detail is in the requirements guide, and county steps are in the Ventura County IHSS guide.

Ventura County in numbers
Department of Finance figures put the county at 824,306 people on January 1, 2026, with 92,063 living in unincorporated areas. It is older than California as a whole: 17.4% of residents are 65 or over against 15.7% statewide, 7.2% have passed 75, and half the population is older than 39.6 (ACS 2020–2024). Median household income is $109,797, above the state's $99,122, while median gross rent is $2,317 and the median home value $822,700; many caregivers therefore live in the lower-cost parts of the plain or the Santa Clara River Valley and drive to clients in Camarillo, Ventura's hillsides or the Conejo Valley.
Hospital discharges drive a lot of short-term work. HCAI lists Los Robles Hospital and Medical Center in Thousand Oaks (312 licensed beds), Community Memorial Hospital in Ventura (250), St. John's Regional Medical Center in Oxnard (241) and Ventura County Medical Center in Ventura (180, reported together with Santa Paula Hospital), plus St. John's Hospital Camarillo and a 25-bed Community Memorial hospital in Ojai. Across the line, the Los Angeles County page and Santa Clarita cover the neighboring markets.
