Finding in-home caregiver jobs in Oxnard

Oxnard sits at the western edge of the Oxnard Plain, surrounded by strawberry and vegetable fields, and the care requests that come from here reflect a younger, larger and more Spanish-speaking city than its neighbors. St. John's Regional Medical Center on North Rose Avenue is the main hospital, so many requests begin with a discharge from there: a parent going home after a fall, a stroke or surgery, to a household where adult children work days. The postings above refresh as Oxnard families publish them, and with a modest radius you will also see Port Hueneme, Camarillo and Ventura.

Language is the first thing to get right in your profile. The 2020–2024 ACS counts Spanish as the home language for 60.7% of Oxnard residents over four; 26.4% of that age group are Spanish speakers with limited English, and English-only homes account for just 32.1%. If you are bilingual, say so in your headline. The county is also home to Indigenous migrant families from Mexico: the Mixteco/Indígena Community Organizing Project, which started out serving the Mixteco community in Oxnard, counts 20,000 Indigenous migrants in Ventura County and names Mixteco, Zapoteco, Purépecha and Triqui among their languages. If you speak one of them, list it, because few caregivers can.

Pay

Caregiver pay in Oxnard: how much caregivers make

Public figures first, then what they mean for private work. Statistics describe employed aides across the Oxnard–Thousand Oaks–Ventura, CA metro (Ventura County); private rates on CaregiverConnect are agreed between each caregiver and family and are not tracked by any agency.

Who is the employer. A family that hires you directly is your employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

Oxnard is not among the cities with their own wage law in UC Berkeley's inventory, so households hiring privately pay at least the state's $16.90. IHSS pays $20.97 an hour countywide, and it is also the way a daughter, son or grandchild caring for an eligible relative can be paid. Median household income in the city is $96,212, a little below the county's $109,797, so treat the IHSS figure as your reference point when you quote a rate; being bilingual, driving, and covering nights or weekends are fair reasons to ask for more. Days past nine hours and weeks past 45 earn overtime.

How to enroll as a provider in Ventura County, with the office phone lines and orientation steps, is in the IHSS Ventura County guide. IHSS wages for every county we cover, with effective dates, are in the IHSS pay by county guide.

How the public numbers relate to private rates, and what affects them, is covered in the caregiver pay guide.

Rules

Caregiver requirements in California, applied to Oxnard

Working privately for an Oxnard household on non-medical tasks requires no license. Licensed agencies have to enroll their aides with the Home Care Aide Registry ($35 every two years); for independents it is a choice. For IHSS, Oxnard is handled by the Ventura office on Market Street (805-654-3260), with the Public Authority in Suite 213 (805-654-3416). A relative or friend who will care for an approved recipient attends a separate non-registry orientation; anyone wanting registry referrals attends an information session in English or Spanish and completes a phone interview. Either way, expect to show ID and your original Social Security card and to pay for Live Scan yourself. St. John's and local nursing homes hire certified nursing assistants. The county's 24-hour abuse line is 805-654-3200. The requirements guide has the full statewide picture.

Questions

Caregiver jobs in Oxnard: frequently asked questions

Is Spanish required for caregiving jobs in Oxnard?

Not always, but it helps a great deal: six in ten residents five and older speak Spanish at home. English-only caregivers should say which tasks they are strongest at and be clear about language in their profile.

My grandmother lives in Oxnard. Could IHSS pay me to look after her?

Yes, if she is approved for IHSS. You would be a non-registry provider: the Public Authority (805-654-3416) books you into a special orientation, then you complete the enrollment forms and Live Scan. The rate is $20.97 an hour.

Is there a CNA course in Oxnard itself?

The closest community-college course is at Ventura College on Telegraph Road in Ventura. Ask the Oxnard job center on North Ventura Road whether Ventura County Heal can pay for your training.

Which areas should an Oxnard caregiver cover?

Most Oxnard caregivers can reach the whole city plus Port Hueneme, which shares its Gold Coast Transit service. Add Camarillo or Ventura only if you are comfortable driving to them at shift-change times.

I speak Mixteco. Is that worth mentioning?

Yes. MICOP describes the county's Mixteco community as culturally and linguistically isolated, and a caregiver who can speak with an older relative in Mixteco is rare. Put it next to Spanish in your languages.

Where do Oxnard families post?
