Finding in-home caregiver jobs in Thousand Oaks

Thousand Oaks is the central town of the Conejo Valley, incorporated in 1964, and over the following decade it annexed most of Newbury Park and about two-thirds of the planned community around Westlake. Families post from all three areas under the same city name, so a request labeled Thousand Oaks can sit anywhere from the west end of Newbury Park to the Westlake side near the Los Angeles County line. The 101 runs through the middle of the city; check the distance shown on each posting before you apply. The listings above refresh whenever a household in or near the city publishes a need, and you can widen your radius to take in Simi Valley or Camarillo.

Older residents shape the work here. One in five people in the city is 65 or older, 9.6% are 75 or older, and 39.4% of households have a member who is 65-plus (ACS 2020–2024). When the person hiring is an adult child arranging care from a distance, your profile has to do the introducing: state where you live, which parts of town you can reach by 8 a.m., whether you drive, and which kinds of care you have personally provided. Spanish is spoken at home by 12.6% of residents, and Chinese by about 2,300 people, so list any language beyond English.

Types of caregiver jobs in Thousand Oaks

Common requests are a few hours of help each weekday for a parent still living in the house where they raised the family, drives to appointments at Los Robles on Janss Road, companionship for a widowed parent, and evening or overnight cover after a hospital stay. Expect questions about memory loss, because a parent with early dementia who still lives at home is a typical reason a Conejo Valley family starts looking. Without experience, start with errands, meal preparation, light housekeeping and outings to the Goebel Center; bathing, transfers and incontinence care are normally given to people with a CNA certificate or provable experience.

Pay

Caregiver pay in Thousand Oaks: how much caregivers make

Public figures first, then what they mean for private work. Statistics describe employed aides across the Oxnard–Thousand Oaks–Ventura, CA metro (Ventura County); private rates on CaregiverConnect are agreed between each caregiver and family and are not tracked by any agency.

MeasureHourlySource and coverage
Home health and personal care aides, Oxnard–Thousand Oaks–Ventura, CA metro (Ventura County)$16.50 median ($17.88 mean)BLS OEWS, May 2025; 15,250 jobs; concentration 1.7× national
IHSS provider wage, Ventura County$20.97CDSS; effective July 1, 2026
California minimum wage$16.90effective January 1, 2026
Nursing assistants, Oxnard–Thousand Oaks–Ventura, CA metro (Ventura County)$22.50 medianBLS OEWS, May 2025 (certified roles, for comparison)

Who is the employer. A family that hires you directly is your employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

Thousand Oaks, like the rest of Ventura County, is absent from UC Berkeley's local minimum wage inventory, leaving California's $16.90 as the minimum. Ventura County's IHSS providers earn $20.97 from July 1, 2026, which is $4.47 more than the typical (median) aide in the metro earns and higher than the Los Angeles County IHSS rate just over the line. Household incomes in the city are high (a median of $135,603, ACS 2020–2024) and the median home is valued at $991,600, so private families can often pay above the IHSS figure, especially for driving, dementia experience, weekend shifts or live-in arrangements. Live-in or long shifts trigger the personal attendant overtime rule (a single ten-hour day already crosses the nine-hour line, as does any week over 45 hours), so put the overtime rate in writing.

How to enroll as a provider in Ventura County, with the office phone lines and orientation steps, is in the IHSS Ventura County guide. IHSS wages for every county we cover, with effective dates, are in the IHSS pay by county guide.

How the public numbers relate to private rates, and what affects them, is covered in the caregiver pay guide.

Rules

Caregiver requirements in California, applied to Thousand Oaks

No state license is involved when a Thousand Oaks family hires you itself for non-medical help. Licensed agencies have to register each aide they employ with the CDSS Home Care Aide Registry; if you work independently, joining it is optional and costs $35 plus Live Scan, using the PIN set aside for independent aides. For paid IHSS work, Ventura County's IHSS Public Authority (805-654-3416) runs two tracks: a relative or friend chosen by the client attends a non-registry orientation, while anyone who wants referrals picks an information and orientation session in Ventura or Simi Valley, brings a government ID and original Social Security card, completes Live Scan at their own cost and passes a phone interview. Nurse assistant jobs at Los Robles or a skilled nursing facility require CDPH certification. Read the California requirements guide or the Ventura County IHSS guide for the full steps.

Questions

Caregiver jobs in Thousand Oaks: frequently asked questions

Do Newbury Park and Westlake postings count as Thousand Oaks?

Most of Newbury Park and part of Westlake are inside the city, so families there often post under Thousand Oaks. Westlake Village itself is a separate city in Los Angeles County; check the distance on the posting rather than the name.

What does IHSS pay a provider in Thousand Oaks?

$20.97 an hour from July 1, 2026, the Ventura County rate that applies everywhere in the county. Providers may also claim travel time and overtime where they qualify; the county pay comparison sets it against other counties.

How do I join the IHSS registry from the Conejo Valley?

Call the Public Authority on 805-654-3416 and book an information and orientation session; the closest are held in Simi Valley. Take a government photo ID and the Social Security card itself (not a copy), then complete Live Scan and the phone interview.

Where can I train as a CNA near Thousand Oaks?

The Simi Institute for Careers & Education on Blackstock Avenue in Simi Valley runs a $1,300 nurse assistant course with daytime and evening/Saturday sections. Low- or moderate-income residents can ask the America's Job Center about no-cost healthcare training first.

Is dementia experience useful in Thousand Oaks?

Yes. A fifth of residents are over 65, and Senior Concerns runs both an adult day center and caregiver support groups for families coping with it. Describe the stage of dementia you have handled and how you dealt with wandering or sundowning.

Can I get around Thousand Oaks without a car?

It is hard; the city is spread out across hills and most clients expect you to drive. If you do not, say so on your profile and keep your radius small. Clients aged 65 and over can book Dial-A-Ride for their own trips at $4.00 each way.

Where do Thousand Oaks families post their needs?

On the Thousand Oaks family page, which also shows caregivers in the area once their profiles are live.
