How to find an in-home caregiver in Thousand Oaks

Your first step is a free posting listing your ZIP code (91360, 91362 or 91320 in Newbury Park), the tasks, the days and the times. Caregivers whose travel radius reaches you see it and apply, and anyone who lists Thousand Oaks as home shows up above once their profile is published. Because rents in the city have a median of $2,664 (ACS 2020–2024), many applicants may live in Simi Valley, Camarillo, Oxnard or the San Fernando Valley and drive in on the 101; ask each person how long the trip takes at the hour you need them and what happens on a day the freeway stops.

Describe your parent as a stranger would need to know them: whether they still walk the stairs, use a walker or wheelchair, see doctors at Los Robles or across the county line, live alone, and enjoy going out. In Thousand Oaks 13.1% of households consist of one person 65 or over, living alone, so a caregiver is often the only regular visitor; mention that if it applies. If your parent prefers Spanish, Mandarin or another language, name it in the posting.

Choosing well

Evaluating caregivers in Thousand Oaks

Check what you are told. A Home Care Aide registration can be looked up on the CDSS registry; it is required of agency aides and voluntary for people who work for themselves. An IHSS provider has been through the Ventura County Public Authority's enrollment, which includes a Live Scan check and, for the registry, a phone interview. A Certified Nursing Assistant can be confirmed with CDPH. Next, phone two former clients, make sure your parent joins the interview, have the applicant sign consent for a consumer background report, and book a first paid week as a trial. We do not screen or background-check anyone who applies through CaregiverConnect, and the Verified badge says only that some document came to us for review.

Questions families here ask at interview

  • Where do you drive from, and how long is that trip on the 101 during the morning rush?
  • What did you do for the last client you helped home from Los Robles?
  • Do you hold Ventura County IHSS registry status, a Home Care Aide number or a CNA certificate?
  • Could you take my father to the Goebel Center's senior nutrition program and stay with him there?
  • What would you do if my mother tried to leave the house alone in the evening?
  • Do you speak any language besides English, and would you be comfortable with Mandarin-speaking relatives on the phone?
  • What hourly rate do you expect, and what changes for nights, Sundays or a live-in week?
Schedules and cost

What in-home care costs in Thousand Oaks: hourly rates and schedules

Thousand Oaks postings tend to be weekday mornings (bathing, breakfast, pills), afternoons of company and driving, overnight cover for a few weeks after surgery, and Saturday or Sunday shifts so the spouse carrying most of the load can rest. A day at the Senior Concerns adult day center or a senior nutrition meal at the Goebel Center can take several hours off what you pay for privately.

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

Thousand Oaks sets no wage above the state's $16.90, though few experienced caregivers here will work for that. Ventura County pays IHSS providers $20.97 an hour from July 1, 2026, aides employed in the metro have a median of $16.50 and a mean of $17.88, and CareScout's California median for an agency caregiver is $40 an hour. Expect most independent caregivers here to quote between the IHSS and agency figures. Overtime starts after the ninth hour of any day and the 45th of any week, and paying a single household worker $3,000 or more during 2026 makes you liable for employer payroll taxes.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.

Questions

Hiring a caregiver in Thousand Oaks: frequently asked questions

How do I find a caregiver in Thousand Oaks or Newbury Park?

Open a family account, then publish what you need under your ZIP code. Caregivers whose radius covers your street can apply, and you decide whom to interview; posting costs nothing.

What should I budget for a private caregiver in Thousand Oaks?

Use the county IHSS wage of $20.97 as a realistic starting point and the $40 California agency median as the upper reference. Dementia care, driving and nights usually push the rate higher.

Is there adult day care in Thousand Oaks?

Senior Concerns on Hodencamp Road runs an adult day center for older adults with memory or physical impairments. Combined with a morning or late-afternoon caregiver, it can cover a working day.

Can a family member be paid through IHSS in Thousand Oaks?

When a parent is approved for IHSS through Medi-Cal, a relative can be the provider as a non-registry provider; the Public Authority schedules a separate orientation for family and friends, and the pay is $20.97 an hour.

Who can drive my parent to appointments?

Your caregiver, if you agree on mileage, or Thousand Oaks Dial-A-Ride, which takes residents 65 and older and ADA cardholders for $4.00 each way. Book on (805) 375-5467 or through the app.

Does CaregiverConnect check caregivers' backgrounds?

No. Checking references, registrations and, with consent, a background report is up to you before anyone starts work in your home.
