How to find an in-home caregiver in Santa Paula

Santa Paula has fewer care options inside city limits than a family might expect. The state's licensing files show one skilled nursing facility (Santa Paula Post Acute Center, 99 beds), one six-bed elder care home holding a license, and no home care agency licensed at a Santa Paula address. If your parent intends to remain in the family home, the realistic choices are a relative, an IHSS provider, or a caregiver you hire directly. When residents were asked for the city's 2025 Master Plan for Aging, 45% said there are too few caregivers, and 48% were dissatisfied with dementia resources, so start looking early, before a hospital discharge forces the decision.

Write the post for the people likely to answer it. Spanish is spoken at home by 64.2% of residents over four according to ACS 2020–2024; note the language your mother or father is most at ease in. Mention the address area, the hours, whether the job involves driving to appointments, and whether the caregiver can use your car. Applicants from Santa Paula itself can usually arrive fastest; others may come from Ventura, Oxnard or Fillmore. The profiles further down are ordered by how close each caregiver is to the ZIP code entered, and new sign-ups are added automatically.

Choosing well

Evaluating caregivers in Santa Paula

Check what each applicant can show. Anyone working as a Ventura County IHSS provider will have sat through the Public Authority's orientation and been fingerprinted by Live Scan. Aides on an agency payroll must be listed in California's Home Care Aide Registry, some independents choose to register too, and a nursing assistant's certificate is issued by CDPH. Ring two previous employers, invite your parent to the interview, and arrange one paid trial day ahead of any regular hours. CaregiverConnect checks no one's background and confirms no credentials; a background report, should you want it, is bought directly with the caregiver's written permission.

Questions families here ask at interview

  • Where in or near Santa Paula do you live, and how do you travel at 7 a.m.?
  • ¿Puede hablar con mi papá en español todo el día?
  • Have you looked after patients discharged from Santa Paula Hospital or Santa Paula Post Acute Center?
  • Would you go with my mother to dialysis or to her clinic appointments on Harvard Boulevard?
  • Are you willing to book Valley Express Dial-A-Ride for her and ride along as her assistant?
  • If she qualifies for IHSS, would you enroll as her provider?
  • Tell me what you would do if she fell or seemed confused while we were unreachable.
Schedules and cost

What in-home care costs in Santa Paula: hourly rates and schedules

Santa Paula families commonly ask for early help with washing, dressing and breakfast on weekdays; a visit around noon that fits the senior center lunch; whole days when there is dialysis or a specialist appointment; and daily cover for a few weeks after someone is discharged. If you need weekends, say so, since fewer caregivers offer them.

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

No Santa Paula wage ordinance shows up in UC Berkeley's Labor Center tracking, leaving $16.90 an hour as the state minimum for any private caregiver. Ventura County IHSS pays its providers $20.97, a reasonable target for a direct hire doing personal care, while the statewide agency median in CareScout's 2025 survey is $40. Only 9% of residents in the city's aging survey thought paid caregivers are adequately compensated, so offers near the minimum may draw few applicants. Budget for overtime, too: the Domestic Worker Bill of Rights sets the line for personal attendants at nine hours daily and 45 weekly. If your relative has or can get Medi-Cal, apply for IHSS first, because IHSS then covers the wages of whichever provider your relative picks.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.
