How to find an in-home caregiver in Piru

Piru is an unincorporated community, a census-designated place in Ventura County, with about 2,185 residents in ACS 2020–2024 (the margin is ±527). Roughly 367 are 65 or older, and four in ten of its 591 households have someone that age at home. With so few residents, families here often hire from the wider Heritage Valley, so be specific in your post about where the house is and when the caregiver must arrive.

Two in three Piru residents over age four (66.5%) speak Spanish at home, and about a third of everyone in that age group speaks English less than "very well." If your father is most comfortable in Spanish, ask for it, and ask candidates to read his medication labels aloud to you in both languages. Transport is the other practical question. A caregiver without a car can come in on the Valley Express Piru Route, which stops at Piru Square and Valle Naranjal, or use the Valley Express Dial-A-Ride; ask which they will use and what time it gets them to your door.

Choosing well

Evaluating caregivers in Piru

Licensing records show no home care agency, nursing home or home health agency with a Piru address, so most people who answer your post will be independent caregivers. Ask what they hold. A CNA certificate can be looked up with CDPH. A Ventura County IHSS provider has attended the county's orientation and passed a criminal background check with Live Scan fingerprints; providers on the Public Authority's registry have also had a phone interview. An independent caregiver may join the Home Care Aide Registry but is not required to. Call at least two references, ask what the person did when something went wrong, and stay home during the first shift. CaregiverConnect does not run background, identity or reference checks; if you want a background check, get written consent and order it yourself.

Questions families here ask at interview

  • ¿Puede hablar con mi papá en español? Can you explain his appointment notes to him in Spanish?
  • Will you come by car, by the Piru Route bus or by Dial-A-Ride, and what time can you get here?
  • Could you take my mother to the meal site at Nikki's Casamia on Center Street and stay with her?
  • Have you helped someone get to the clinics in Fillmore, and do you know how to book Dial-A-Ride for a return trip?
  • How do you help someone with limited mobility in and out of the shower?
  • Are you a Ventura County IHSS provider, or would you enroll if my mother is approved for hours?
  • If your car or the bus lets you down, who covers the shift?
Schedules and cost

What in-home care costs in Piru: hourly rates and schedules

Bus-timed shifts. On weekdays the earliest Piru Route bus is at Piru Square by 6:37 a.m., and loops follow through the day with a gap around noon, so a caregiver who rides it can start early; weekend service starts later and ends with a 5:54 p.m. return to Fillmore. Midday care. Many families book a block around lunch, either at home or at the Center Street meal site. Clinic days. Appointments in Fillmore take a longer shift, since the caregiver travels both ways with your parent. After a hospital stay. Plan for more hours, possibly overnight, for the first weeks.

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

The UC Berkeley Labor Center shows no local minimum wage for Piru or anywhere in Ventura County, so a caregiver you employ directly must be paid at least California's $16.90, with overtime for a personal attendant after nine hours in a day or 45 in a week. Aides in the metro earn a $16.50 median, Ventura County IHSS pays its providers $20.97, and the statewide agency median from CareScout is $40. ACS puts Piru's median household income at $89,375, and about half of residents have public coverage such as Medi-Cal. If your parent is one of them, start an IHSS application with the Human Services Agency (805-654-3260) before you budget private hours: IHSS can pay the caregiver your parent chooses, including a relative or friend.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.
