How to find an in-home caregiver in San Fernando

Las Palmas Park on S. Huntington Street is where much of the city's senior program happens. The Elderly Nutrition Program, run by ONEgeneration with partial funding from the county Area Agency on Aging, opens its dining room at 9 a.m. on weekdays for sign-in and coffee and serves a hot midday meal at 11 for anyone 60 or older for a $3 suggested donation. The Las Palmas Senior Club organizes trips that leave from the park, and the city runs free, bilingual fitness classes for residents 55 and older. Older residents who can no longer get out may qualify for home-delivered meals, brought between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on weekdays.

Those programs suggest the kind of help many San Fernando families post for: a caregiver who gets a parent to Las Palmas by late morning, books Mission City Transit for a clinic visit, or stays with someone at home on the days meals are delivered. Seven in ten residents five and older (70.5%) speak Spanish at home, so say which language your parent prefers for daily conversation. Choosing well

Evaluating caregivers in San Fernando

San Fernando has a dozen licensed home health agencies, so you will meet applicants who have done agency visits. Ask which agency, ask for the supervisor's number, and look up any CNA or home health aide certificate on CDPH's verification site. IHSS providers have completed county orientation and fingerprinting; an aide placed through a licensed home care organization has to hold a Home Care Aide Registry listing. Independent caregivers without credentials can be excellent, but test that in practice: talk through a scenario such as a parent who wanders at night, phone two former employers, and pay for one supervised shift before you commit. CaregiverConnect does not check caregivers. A background report needs the applicant's written authorization, and you order it.

Questions families here ask at interview

  • ¿Puede llevar a mi mamá al almuerzo de Las Palmas Park antes de las 11?
  • How would you schedule Mission City Transit for Dad's medical appointment, and would you ride with him?
  • Have you worked with a home health agency or hospice in San Fernando, and may I call your supervisor?
  • My mother gets home-delivered meals. Could you make sure she eats and log what she leaves?
  • Would you join her on a Las Palmas Senior Club trip if she wants to go?
  • Should IHSS authorize hours for Dad, would you enroll and be paid by the county as his provider?
  • What would you do if he became short of breath while you were alone with him?

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

Families sometimes assume Los Angeles city wage rules apply here. They do not. San Fernando is a separate city, and since the Labor Center at UC Berkeley records no San Fernando wage law, $16.90, the California minimum, is the lowest hourly pay you may offer a caregiver on your own payroll. Three numbers help you judge an offer: $16.50, the BLS May 2025 median for aides across the two-county Los Angeles–Orange metro; $19.64, the county's IHSS provider wage; and $40, CareScout's 2025 statewide median hourly charge for agency non-medical care. Domestic worker law adds overtime for a personal attendant beyond nine hours in a day or 45 in a week. With a citywide ACS median household income of $83,024, many families mix private hours with IHSS; a parent on Medi-Cal can apply through DPSS at (888) 944-4477.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.

Questions

Hiring a caregiver in San Fernando: frequently asked questions

Where do seniors eat lunch in San Fernando?

At Las Palmas Park, 505 S. Huntington Street, Monday to Friday. Service begins at 11 a.m., the suggested donation for those 60 and older is $3, and you sign up on site. Questions go to (818) 654-8379.

Can my mother get meals delivered at home?

If she lives in the city, is 60 or older and is homebound, she can apply. A coordinator reviews eligibility first, and meals then arrive on weekdays between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

How does Mission City Transit work for a medical visit outside the city?

San Fernando residents may ride to approved medical sites beyond city limits. Call (818) 366-4119 at least five days ahead with the pickup address, time, destination and any walker, wheelchair or escort, and be at the curb early.

Do Los Angeles wage rules apply to a caregiver in San Fernando?

No. San Fernando is an independent city with no wage ordinance listed by the Labor Center, so California's $16.90 hourly minimum covers a caregiver you hire.

Does CaregiverConnect background-check caregivers?

No. You decide what to verify and carry out the checks yourself. Publishing a San Fernando request is free, while messaging caregivers and hiring through the site require Family Premium at $24.99 monthly.
