How to find an in-home caregiver in Temple City

Many older Temple City residents already have part of their week covered by the city. Live Oak Park Community Center on Bogue Street serves a senior lunch at 11 a.m. for a recommended $3 donation, with photo ID required at check-in, and runs Meals on Wheels for seniors who cannot leave home. Dial-A-Ride vans take members 60 and older anywhere inside the city for 50 cents. What the city cannot supply is a person at home. Its vans are curb-to-curb, and the driver will not walk your father to the door or carry bags inside, so the service guide itself suggests bringing an escort or personal care attendant. That gap, plus mornings, evenings and weekends, is where most families here hire.

Spell out language needs in your post. The 2020–2024 ACS counts 50.5% of Temple City's population over age four speaking an Asian or Pacific Island language with family and 13.0% speaking Spanish; 34.8% rate their English below "very well." A Cantonese-speaking parent and a Mandarin-speaking caregiver may not understand each other, so name the dialect. Caregiver profiles near 91780 appear below and change as new caregivers sign up.

Choosing well

Evaluating caregivers in Temple City

Start with the paper trail each applicant has. Certified nursing assistants and home health aides are listed in CDPH's online certificate lookup; ask which Temple City nursing home or agency they worked for and phone that supervisor. Someone already working as an IHSS provider went through DPSS fingerprinting and orientation. Agencies may send only aides whose names CDSS has entered in the Home Care Aide Registry. Plenty of strong independent caregivers hold none of these, which is why two reference calls of your own matter: ask each reference about a fall, a missed medication or a confused evening. Let your parent meet the last two candidates, then pay for one trial shift with a son, daughter or spouse in the house. CaregiverConnect does not screen or background-check caregivers; you can order a report yourself once the applicant consents in writing.

Questions families here ask at interview

  • Can you have my mother checked in at Live Oak Park before the 10 a.m. cutoff and stay for lunch?
  • Do you speak Cantonese, Mandarin or Vietnamese, and could you read her medicine labels to her?
  • Would you ride along on Dial-A-Ride to her doctor in Arcadia or San Gabriel as her attendant?
  • Have you worked at Santa Anita Convalescent Hospital or helped someone home after a nursing home stay?
  • How would you spend a dialysis day with my father, before and after the treatment?
  • Would you be willing to sign up with DPSS as her IHSS provider if she is approved?
  • What would you do first if he became confused and wanted to leave the house at night?

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

UC Berkeley's inventory shows no Temple City wage ordinance. Pay for a caregiver working in the city therefore starts at California's $16.90. Dial-A-Ride's guide also serves adjacent unincorporated county areas; a parent who lives in one of those falls under Los Angeles County's $18.47, in force since July 1, 2026. Useful markers when you set a rate: $16.50 is the May 2025 BLS median across Los Angeles and Orange counties for home health and personal care aides, $19.64 is what IHSS pays, CareScout's 2025 survey found California agencies billing a median $40 per hour for non-medical help, and $94 a day is its state median for adult day health care. The Domestic Worker Bill of Rights gives a personal attendant you employ time-and-a-half after hour nine of a shift and after hour 45 of a week. Half of Temple City households take in more than $104,425 a year (ACS 2020–2024).

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.
