How to find an in-home caregiver in South Gate

In ACS 2020–2024, a third of South Gate households (32.9%) include someone aged 65 or older, and 1,581 residents in that age group live by themselves. Say in the posting who needs care, what they still manage alone, the schedule and any driving involved. If your mother lives alone, say what worries you most: falls, missed meals or forgotten pills. Add 90280 as the ZIP code so nearby caregivers see it; the profile list on this page changes as people near South Gate sign up.

Spanish is spoken at home by 81.5% of South Gate residents aged five and older, so asking for a bilingual caregiver is normal here and worth stating up front. City services can carry part of the week. Phone-A-Ride takes residents 62 and older, or permanently disabled, on medical and local grocery trips, and a caregiver may ride along. The Margaret Travis Senior Center has weekday activities and a hot lunch, and a Meals on Wheels program delivers to homes. Medi-Cal can open the door to IHSS hours as well, and DPSS allows family, friends or neighbors to serve as the paid provider. Agencies and programs that serve the wider county are on the Los Angeles County family page.

Choosing well

Evaluating caregivers in South Gate

No one at CaregiverConnect has vetted the people who answer your post, so treat each one as unverified until you have checked. Ask for registry or certificate numbers and look them up. Home care aides registered with the state have passed its background check, though registration is required only for agency employees; certified nursing assistants hold a CDPH certificate. An IHSS provider will have finished county enrollment and PASC orientation. Hold interviews at your parent's house and in your parent's own language. Call two references, get a signed consent form before any screening, and pay for a trial shift first. With a parent who lives alone, settle on a daily text or call after each visit.

  • Can you speak with her and with her doctors in Spanish?
  • Would you go with her on Phone-A-Ride to her appointment at Rancho Los Amigos?

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

Without a South Gate wage ordinance, California's $16.90 is the floor for anyone you hire. For metro aides, BLS reported a $16.50 median (May 2025); IHSS pays providers $19.64 in Los Angeles County; and a California agency bills a $40.00 median for non-medical help. Direct hires generally fall between the last two. State domestic worker rules add overtime for the tenth hour of any day and for every hour beyond 45 in the week.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.
