How to find an in-home caregiver in Santa Monica
In Santa Monica a private caregiver usually works alongside an established set of local services. WISE & Healthy Aging on Fourth Street runs an adult day center on weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., with Spanish-language programming through its Somos Amigos group, plus care management and caregiver support groups. Meals on Wheels West delivers to homebound residents of any age. The city's MODE program subsidizes Lyft and wheelchair van rides in Santa Monica and to some medical facilities outside it. Los Angeles County IHSS covers authorized hours for residents on Medi-Cal. A caregiver you hire covers the rest: mornings before the day center, evenings, nights and recovery after a stay at UCLA Santa Monica or Saint John's.
Describe the hours, tasks and any driving, add your ZIP code, and caregivers who work in Santa Monica can reply; the profile list above refreshes as people nearby register. Most residents rent (72.1% of homes in ACS 2020–2024), so mention parking and building access if they affect the start of a shift. A preferred language other than English deserves a place in the opening sentence.

Evaluating caregivers in Santa Monica
Check before you trust. A Home Care Aide Registry listing is mandatory for anyone an agency sends and optional for independents, who reach it only after passing the state check. A certified nursing assistant has passed the state competency exam that follows an approved training course. IHSS providers are enrolled with Los Angeles County. Then do your own work: interview in the apartment with your relative there, speak to two former employers, have the applicant sign consent for a screening service you choose, and try one paid shift first. Nobody at CaregiverConnect screens applicants; our Verified badge covers a single uploaded document.

| Reference point | Hourly | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Employed aides, Los Angeles–Long Beach–Anaheim metro (Los Angeles and Orange counties) | $16.50 median | BLS OEWS, May 2025 |
| IHSS provider wage, Los Angeles County | $19.64 | CDSS; effective January 1, 2026 |
| California minimum wage | $16.90 | effective January 1, 2026 |
| Agency non-medical home care, California median (CareScout 2025) | $40.00 | CareScout Cost of Care Survey 2025 |
Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.
The city sets its own floor, $18.47 since the first of July 2026, which is higher than the $16.90 state rate in the table, and the city adds paid sick leave of 40 or 72 hours a year depending on employer size. The ordinance is written for businesses; whether it reaches a household employer is a question for the county's wage office at wagehelp@dcba.lacounty.gov, and paying at least $18.47 avoids the issue. Private rates on the Westside usually land above the county IHSS figure and below what agencies bill, with more for overnights and dementia care. Santa Monica households that hire a live-out attendant for long days should budget 1.5 times the base rate for time beyond nine hours on any day, or beyond 45 hours in any week, under the Domestic Worker Bill of Rights.
No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.
