How to find an in-home caregiver in Alhambra
Two kinds of Alhambra household tend to look for in-home caregivers. In one, an older parent shares a home with adult children who are at work most of the day; ACS 2020–2024 finds someone 65 or older in 10,569 of the city's 30,425 households. In the other, the parent lives alone, as 2,622 older residents do, often in a rented apartment.
Home care in Alhambra works best when it fits around what the city already offers. The Joslyn Adult Center offers activities and a weekday hot lunch, and homebound residents 60 and over can get free delivered meals (details below). A private caregiver fills in around those: early mornings, the trip to lunch and back, the first days home from Alhambra Hospital Medical Center. In your posting, list the tasks, the days, any driving, your ZIP and the language your parent speaks best; new Alhambra-area caregivers show up in the profiles above when they register.

Evaluating caregivers in Alhambra
No one at CaregiverConnect vets applicants or runs checks on them, so this part is yours. If an applicant claims Home Care Aide Registry status, search the state registry for the number; registration requires a background check, but only agency staff must have it. A CNA, for example one trained at Pasadena City College, holds a CDPH certificate you can confirm. IHSS providers have been through county enrollment. If your parent speaks Cantonese, Mandarin or Vietnamese, hold part of the interview in that language, or ask a relative to, because "speaks Chinese" on a profile can mean many things. Call two references, have the applicant sign consent before you order any screening, and try one paid shift together first, then talk about a regular schedule.
Questions families here ask at interview
- My mother speaks Cantonese and very little English. Which languages and dialects can you use comfortably all day?
- Have you helped someone home from Alhambra Hospital Medical Center or another hospital stay?
- Can you walk her to the Joslyn Adult Center for lunch and stay with her there?
- Would you ride along as her escort on Senior Ride if she gets a place?
- Which of these can I check: the aide registry, a CNA certificate or IHSS enrollment?
- What is your rate for weekday afternoons, and is it different on weekends?
What in-home care costs in Alhambra: hourly rates and schedules
Alhambra families commonly post four-hour weekday visits for someone living alone, full weekdays while adult children work, short-term daily help after a hospital stay, a Saturday shift to give a family carer a break, and, less often, nights for someone whose dementia keeps them awake.
| Reference point | Hourly | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Employed aides, Los Angeles–Long Beach–Anaheim metro (Los Angeles and Orange counties) | $16.50 median | BLS OEWS, May 2025 |
| IHSS provider wage, Los Angeles County | $19.64 | CDSS; effective January 1, 2026 |
| California minimum wage | $16.90 | effective January 1, 2026 |
| Agency non-medical home care, California median (CareScout 2025) | $40.00 | CareScout Cost of Care Survey 2025 |
Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.
Alhambra has no local wage ordinance, so the California $16.90 is the minimum; aides across the metro had a $16.50 median as of May 2025. CareScout puts agency non-medical care at a $40.00 hourly median statewide, while independent caregivers quote their own prices, which usually come in under what agencies bill. A bilingual caregiver, or one with dementia experience, may ask more than the IHSS rate of $19.64. Medi-Cal enrollment can open the door to IHSS hours, and a relative may be the paid provider. California's overtime rule for household workers adds time and a half beyond nine hours on one day, or beyond 45 in the week, so a live-in plan costs more than the base rate.
No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.

Hiring a caregiver in Alhambra: frequently asked questions
Can I find a Chinese-speaking caregiver for my Alhambra parent?
Write the language and dialect into the posting and check it in the interview. In Alhambra, 42.7% of residents five and older use an Asian or Pacific Island language at home.
What does in-home care cost in Alhambra?
Nobody may be paid under $16.90 an hour. Agencies in California bill a $40.00 median (CareScout 2025); hiring a caregiver directly usually lands between the county IHSS wage and that figure.
Can my father get meals delivered in Alhambra?

Will IHSS pay my son for looking after his grandmother?
It can, as long as she qualifies for Medi-Cal and the county awards her hours. Our IHSS guide for Los Angeles County walks you through applying.
Will CaregiverConnect check out applicants for me?
It will not. Registry searches, phoning references and any screening are steps you take as the person hiring.
