How to find an in-home caregiver in Arcadia

Arcadia families rarely start from nothing. The city runs a weekday lunch for adults 50 and older at the Arcadia Community Center, its Dial-A-Ride vans carry residents 62 and older anywhere inside city limits, and CDPH licenses two adult day health centers with Arcadia addresses. A private caregiver usually fills what those leave open: mornings before a center pickup, the stretch after a home health nurse leaves, nights, and weekends. Write down exactly which of those gaps you need covered. "Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 11 a.m., near Duarte Road and Baldwin Avenue, help with bathing and breakfast" brings better applicants than "need help for Dad".

Language matters more here than in most of the county. In ACS 2020–2024, 47.0% of residents aged five or older speak an Asian or Pacific Islander language at home, and 23.4% speak one with limited English. If your mother is most comfortable in Mandarin or Cantonese, or in Spanish, say so in the first sentence of your post. Profiles of caregivers nearest your ZIP appear below and change as new caregivers finish signing up.

Choosing well

Evaluating caregivers in Arcadia

Applicants in Arcadia will arrive with different paperwork. A certified nursing assistant or home health aide has a CDPH certificate you can look up online. An IHSS provider has already been fingerprinted and has completed the county's orientation. An aide sent by one of the city's licensed home care organizations must appear on the state Home Care Aide Registry. Many good private caregivers hold none of these, so references carry the most weight: call at least two past clients or employers, ask what a normal shift looked like, and include your parent in the interview. Book a paid trial shift while a family member is home. CaregiverConnect does not check anyone's background; with the caregiver's written consent you can order a background report yourself.

Questions families here ask at interview

  • Have you cared for someone coming home from USC Arcadia Hospital, and what did the first week look like?
  • Which languages can you speak with my mother, and how comfortable are you reading her prescription labels?
  • Would you go with Dad to the Community Center lunch and stay through the afternoon program?
  • Are you comfortable booking and riding Arcadia Dial-A-Ride with him to a doctor's office in town?
  • How would you work alongside a home health nurse or hospice team that visits each week?
  • If my father is approved for IHSS, would you enroll as his provider?
  • What would you do if Mom became confused and tried to leave the house at night?

What in-home care costs in Arcadia: hourly rates and schedules

Lunch-hour company. A late-morning shift that covers the walk or ride to the 11:30 a.m. Community Center lunch and the trip home. Around home health and hospice. Daily blocks of personal care between nurse and therapist visits from one of the many agencies based in the city. Overnight. Sleep-in or awake nights for a parent who wanders or gets up often, the kind of arrangement where the Domestic Worker Bill of Rights overtime rules matter most.

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

Arcadia has no minimum wage ordinance in UC Berkeley's inventory, so a caregiver you employ for work inside the city must earn at least California's $16.90 an hour. For comparison: the BLS median for home health and personal care aides across Los Angeles and Orange counties was $16.50 in May 2025, IHSS pays $19.64 in Los Angeles County, and CareScout put the California median for an agency non-medical caregiver at $40 an hour in 2025. A personal attendant you employ is owed time and a half after nine hours in a day or 45 in a week. Arcadia's ACS median household income is $113,516. If your parent has Medi-Cal, call DPSS at (888) 944-4477 about IHSS while you compare private options, since CDSS requires a Medi-Cal eligibility determination.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.
