How to find an in-home caregiver in Norwalk

A posting on CaregiverConnect takes a few minutes: give your Norwalk ZIP code, the tasks, the days and the hours, and every caregiver whose travel radius includes 90650 is told about it. Profiles of caregivers near Norwalk appear above as they join. Because so many Norwalk households are multigenerational (the ACS 2020–2024 average is 3.60 people per household), say who else is home during the shift and what they will handle, so applicants understand the role. If a relative works days and covers evenings, a posting for weekday daytime only is normal here.

Most applicants will drive in from Norwalk itself or from Downey, Whittier, Bellflower and Cerritos; find out how each one would get to you for an early start. If your parent speaks Spanish, which 52.0% of residents five and older speak at home, or Tagalog, at 5.4%, say so in the posting and ask applicants to answer in that language.

Choosing well

Evaluating caregivers in Norwalk

Three credentials can be checked in Norwalk. Agency aides are listed with CDSS as registered home care aides, a listing independents can also hold. Anyone paid through IHSS in the county sat an in-person DPSS orientation and cleared fingerprinting with the state Justice Department. A CNA certificate is issued by CDPH; Río Hondo College in Whittier trains them locally. Verify whichever one an applicant claims. Speak with two former employers by phone, make sure your mother or father joins the interview, then book one or two paid trial days at the house before agreeing a regular week. Screening is up to you: CaregiverConnect runs no background checks, a consumer reporting agency can supply one if the caregiver signs a consent form, and the Verified badge tells you only that someone uploaded a document that we looked at.

Questions families here ask at interview

  • Which part of Norwalk or which nearby city are you coming from, and how long does it take at 7:30 in the morning?
  • Coast Plaza Hospital may discharge my father soon; what help did your last post-hospital client need in the first days home?
  • My mother speaks Spanish and little English; can you hold a whole conversation with her and read her prescription labels aloud?
  • Are you enrolled with Los Angeles County as an IHSS provider, or would you be willing to enroll?
  • Would you go with my father to the senior center lunch on San Antonio Drive and stay with him?
  • How do you handle a client who refuses a shower or gets agitated in the late afternoon?
  • Is your hourly rate different for a Saturday, an overnight, or a shift with errands in your own car?
Schedules and cost

What in-home care costs in Norwalk: hourly rates and schedules

Norwalk families most often post weekday daytime shifts that match an adult child's job, short morning visits for bathing and breakfast, temporary cover while someone recovers from surgery, and Saturday relief for a spouse. Families who use the senior center's weekday lunch or Dial-A-Ride often need fewer paid hours, because part of the day is already covered.

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

Norwalk follows California's $16.90 minimum, as the Berkeley Labor Center inventory shows no city wage law. IHSS providers in the county earn $19.64. In CareScout's 2025 survey, homemaker services from a California agency cost a median $40 hourly, which comes to $91,520 over a year of 44-hour weeks. Use the pair as bookends when you set a rate. Long days add up quickly, because the Domestic Worker Bill of Rights entitles personal attendants to overtime for work beyond 9 hours daily or 45 weekly. If your parent has Medi-Cal and few savings, apply for IHSS first: PASC lists the property limit as $2,000 for one person.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.
