How to find an in-home caregiver in Carson
Most Carson homes are family-owned houses with more than three people in them, and in ACS 2020–2024 almost half the city's households include someone 65 or older. That shapes what a good posting looks like: name the hours nobody else in the house can cover, the tasks (bathing, meals, medication reminders, walking practice), and whether driving your parent is part of the job, for example to appointments or to the senior programs at the Community Center on Carson Street. If your parent is recovering from a stroke and has passed the six-month mark, the city's Stroke Center on the same campus offers group exercise and occupational therapy, and a caregiver can take them there and keep the routines going at home.
Put your 90745 or 90746 ZIP code in the request so caregivers nearby can find it; the profiles shown above change as people sign up. Language matters here. In 51.8% of cases, a Carson resident aged five or more uses some language other than English at home, mainly Spanish or an Asian or Pacific Island language, and about a fifth of Carson is Filipino. Should your mother prefer Tagalog or Spanish, write that in the first line.

Evaluating caregivers in Carson
Checking a caregiver is your responsibility. When an applicant claims registry status, search the state Home Care Aide Registry: registration is compulsory only for people placed by licensed agencies. A certified nursing assistant holds a state certificate you can confirm. An IHSS provider has completed Los Angeles County enrollment. Meet candidates in your own living room, with your parent taking part. Request two references who have seen the person work and phone both, and get written consent before running any background screen of your own. A short paid trial shift, with you nearby, shows more than an hour of questions. CaregiverConnect does not run background checks, and its Verified badge only means one document was reviewed.
Questions families here ask at interview
- My father goes to the Carson Stroke Center. Will you learn his exercises and do them with him at home?
- Can you talk with my mother in Tagalog, Spanish or another language she prefers?
- Would you come with her to Senior Recreation classes and stay with her the whole time?
- Will you schedule Dial-A-Ride trips and go with her, or drive her yourself?
- Have you helped someone with weakness on one side shower without falling?
- Which credentials can you show me: registry number, CNA certificate or IHSS enrollment?
- How much do you charge on a weekday, and how much at night or on a Sunday?
What in-home care costs in Carson: hourly rates and schedules
Carson postings tend to be weekday daytime blocks while adult children work, bathing-and-dressing visits on two or three mornings, afternoon escorts to the Community Center or medical visits, overnights for a parent who is unsteady at night, and Saturday relief for the spouse who provides most of the care.
| Reference point | Hourly | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Employed aides, Los Angeles–Long Beach–Anaheim metro (Los Angeles and Orange counties) | $16.50 median | BLS OEWS, May 2025 |
| IHSS provider wage, Los Angeles County | $19.64 | CDSS; effective January 1, 2026 |
| California minimum wage | $16.90 | effective January 1, 2026 |
| Agency non-medical home care, California median (CareScout 2025) | $40.00 | CareScout Cost of Care Survey 2025 |
Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.
Carson pays caregivers at least California's $16.90; there is no city wage law, and the higher unincorporated county rate does not reach inside city limits. Expect independent quotes above the $19.64 IHSS rate yet under $40.00, the California agency median; experience with stroke recovery or lifting pushes a quote higher. Many Carson families combine county IHSS hours, help from relatives and private hours they pay for. Plan long shifts with the overtime rule in mind: California owes a domestic worker time and a half once a single day stretches past nine hours, and once the weekly total tops 45.
No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.

Hiring a caregiver in Carson: frequently asked questions
Is there a support group for family caregivers in Carson?
Yes. The city hosts one on the first and third Thursdays at 11 a.m. at the Juanita Millender-McDonald Community Center. It is for relatives and friends, and you RSVP on (310) 952-1782, ext. 1476.
Can a Carson Dial-A-Ride trip go outside the city?
For medical appointments, yes: members can travel to Gardena, Harbor City, Lomita, Long Beach, San Pedro and Torrance, plus the designated satellite destinations on the city map.
Can my mother attend Carson senior classes if she needs help in the restroom?
Senior Recreation asks participants to manage their own hygiene, but a care provider is welcome if they stay with her throughout. A caregiver makes those classes possible.
How much does a caregiver cost in Carson?
Nobody may be paid less than $16.90 an hour. Private rates depend on the care involved and generally sit between the IHSS wage and agency prices.
Could my daughter be paid by IHSS for caring for me?
When Medi-Cal is in place and the county grants IHSS hours, the person receiving care can choose a relative as provider. The county IHSS page sets out what to do.
Does CaregiverConnect screen the caregivers for me?
It does not. You check registry status, call references and arrange any background screen before the first shift.
