How to find an in-home caregiver in Altadena

Altadena has no city government, so the help an older resident can draw on comes from several separate bodies. Los Angeles County's Aging & Disabilities Department runs the Altadena Senior Center's programs from a satellite site inside Loma Alta Park, the Altadena Library District delivers books to residents who cannot get out, and the City of Pasadena's Dial-A-Ride carries Altadena residents aged 60 and up. None of those replaces someone in the house. A private caregiver typically covers what they leave open: getting your mother up and dressed, cooking, medication reminders, the hours after a hospital discharge, and nights.

Write the post the way you would brief a neighbor: which days, what time the shift starts, whether stairs or a pet are involved, and whether the caregiver needs to drive. In census survey data for 2020–2024, gathered before the Eaton Fire, 21.3% of Altadena residents aged five and older used Spanish at home. If your parent would rather be spoken to in Spanish, or any other language, put that in the first line. Profiles of the caregivers nearest 91001 appear below and change as new people sign up.

Choosing well

Evaluating caregivers in Altadena

Ask each applicant what paperwork they hold, then check it yourself. CNAs hold CDPH certification, so ask for the certificate number; aides employed by a licensed home care organization must appear on the Home Care Aide Registry, a public online list that CDSS says covers background-checked aides; an IHSS provider has gone through the county's orientation and Live Scan fingerprinting. Plenty of capable private caregivers have none of these, which makes references the real test. Phone two former clients or employers, ask about a hard day as well as a good one, and book a paid trial shift on a day when a family member can stay home. CaregiverConnect does no screening of its own; any background report is yours to order, and only with the applicant's written consent.

Questions families here ask at interview

  • Have you worked in a home with stairs, and how would you help my father get in and out of the car safely?
  • Can you take Mom to the Loma Alta Park senior center for tai chi or the screening clinic and stay with her there?
  • Would you book Pasadena Dial-A-Ride trips with her and ride along, allowing an hour each way?
  • How have you worked alongside a care home or adult day program, if we later use ICON-ADP or a residential home?
  • If IHSS approves Mom, are you willing to register with DPSS as her provider?
  • What do you do if a client refuses a shower or a meal two days in a row?
  • In what languages could you talk with her, and would you go through her medication labels and clinic letters with her?
Schedules and cost

What in-home care costs in Altadena: hourly rates and schedules

Mornings. A short early shift for washing, dressing and breakfast, often set around a library delivery on Wednesday or a class at the senior center. Discharge weeks. Longer daily shifts in the weeks after a parent leaves the hospital or rehab, scaled back as strength returns. Nights and live-in. A caregiver sleeping in, or awake overnight, for a spouse who wanders; this is where the overtime rules for domestic workers matter most.

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

Altadena falls under unincorporated Los Angeles County's minimum wage, which the county's consumer affairs department (DCBA) sets at $18.47 an hour from July 1, 2026 for people who work at least two hours a week at a business or nonprofit there. DCBA's page does not say how the rule treats a family that employs a caregiver itself, so call its wage line on (800) 593-8222, Monday to Friday, before you settle a rate; California's $16.90 is the lowest legal pay in any case. By comparison, the May 2025 BLS median for aides in the Los Angeles–Orange metro was $16.50, IHSS providers here earn $19.64, and CareScout's 2025 figure for an agency's non-medical caregiver in California is $40 an hour. Time and a half is owed to a directly employed caregiver for any hours over nine a day or over 45 a week. Altadena's median household income, $128,720 in ACS 2020–2024, predates the fire. CDSS requires a Medi-Cal eligibility determination for IHSS; you can apply by phone at (888) 944-4477.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.

Safety

Hiring safely in Altadena

Write the job down before the first day: duties, schedule, hourly rate, when overtime begins and how either side can end it, signed by both of you. Keep weekly timesheets, lock up jewelry, cash and pain medication, and set up text alerts on your parent's bank cards. Dial 911 in any emergency. Should you suspect that an Altadena resident is being abused, neglected or financially exploited, phone the statewide Adult Protective Services line, 1-833-401-0832, or the county's Elder and Dependent Abuse Hotline, 1 (877) 477-3646. The private hiring guide explains payroll steps, and the Los Angeles County page summarizes county-run programs.
