How to find an in-home caregiver in Acton

Los Angeles County, not a city, governs Acton, and that shapes how you look for help. No licensed home care organization has an Acton address in the CDSS file, and the county's senior center directory has no Acton entry. The agencies, hospices and facilities lie in Palmdale and the Santa Clarita Valley, where the CDPH file lists dozens of home health and hospice offices. The other pool is closer: people living in or near 93510 who would rather work a few miles from home than commute.

Many Acton homes have an older resident. Of the CDP's 2,696 households, 48.1% count a member aged 65-plus in ACS 2020–2024, and one in four residents of that age (25.5%) lives with a disability. The CDP covers 39.3 square miles of land, so tell applicants the closest cross street, mention steps at the entrance, and say if horses, dogs or other animals live on the property. Spell out whether the job includes driving to doctors in Palmdale or Santa Clarita, and how you will reimburse gas. Posts and profiles above refresh as new people join.

Choosing well

Evaluating caregivers in Acton

Match the paperwork to the tasks. California asks for no license when you hire someone yourself for company, cooking, cleaning or bathing help. If an applicant says they came from an agency, ask for their home care aide registration and look it up on the state site. A former nursing-home or hospital aide from Palmdale, Lancaster or Santa Clarita may carry a CDPH nurse assistant certificate whose status is public. Los Angeles County IHSS providers have sat through a DPSS orientation and cleared a fingerprint-based criminal background check, a clearance that belongs to IHSS rather than to your private arrangement. Ring two past employers, interview at your relative's own kitchen table, and pay for one supervised trial day. We do not screen anyone on CaregiverConnect; a background report is an extra you can purchase from a screening firm once the applicant has agreed on paper.

Questions families here ask at interview

  • Where do you live now, and how long would the drive to our place in Acton take you before 8 a.m.?
  • Are you comfortable driving my mother to Palmdale Regional Medical Center or to appointments in Santa Clarita, and in whose car?
  • Have you been a Los Angeles County IHSS provider, and would you enroll as hers if she is approved?
  • There are animals on our land; is that a problem for you, and are there any you would not be around?
  • How have you handled a client who refused to shower or eat, and what worked?
  • Can you use a gait belt or help with a transfer from bed to wheelchair?
  • What is your plan if the power goes out while you are alone with my father?
  • Which days could you commit to for at least three months?
Schedules and cost

What in-home care costs in Acton: hourly rates and schedules

Most Acton posts ask for fixed weekday shifts of four to eight hours while grown children are at their jobs; the ACS puts the average Acton commute at 47.2 minutes each way, which stretches those days. Spouses doing the caring often ask for two or three free afternoons a week. Discharge from a hospital usually brings a few weeks of daily visits that then taper. Since caregivers drive in, a three- or four-hour minimum fills more easily than an hour-long stop; pair personal care with errands or a medical visit to make the trip worth it.

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

Acton adds one wrinkle. Unincorporated Los Angeles County has its own minimum wage, $18.47 since July 1, 2026, and DCBA (the county consumer affairs department) says it covers anyone putting in two or more weekly hours for a business or nonprofit located there; an agency or care home sending staff to work in Acton has to pay them at least that. DCBA's notice is silent on families who are the employer themselves, so phone its wage line, (800) 593-8222, before fixing a rate, and treat California's $16.90 as the absolute bottom. For comparison, BLS sets the two-county aide median at $16.50 (May 2025), IHSS providers get $19.64, and CareScout's 2025 California median for agency care is $40. Where Medi-Cal is already in place or likely, try IHSS first by calling DPSS at (888) 944-4477; the county could cover part of the week. Hiring privately also makes California's domestic worker overtime rule yours to follow: a personal attendant earns time-and-a-half for any work beyond nine hours on a given day, and for weekly totals above 45.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.

Safety

Hiring safely in Acton

Before day one, sign a short agreement covering tasks, hours, hourly pay, gas money, overtime and the notice period. Collect a weekly timesheet, keep pills and checkbooks under lock, and switch on bank alerts. Signs that someone is mistreating, neglecting or swindling an Acton senior or dependent adult should go to the county Elder Abuse Hotline, 1-877-477-3646, staffed for in-person response at all hours; non-urgent reports can use the APS web portal. If the worry involves a licensed facility, the county lists the Long-Term Care Ombudsman at 1-800-334-9473. For anything life-threatening, dial 911. Payroll and contract basics are in our hiring guide; for the county program, open our Los Angeles County IHSS guide.

How it works

How to hire a private caregiver in Acton (no agency)

CaregiverConnect is a marketplace, not an agency: you hire the caregiver directly, which is why there is no agency mark-up on their hourly rate. That also means screening is your responsibility, and we tell you how.

Questions

Hiring a caregiver in Acton: frequently asked questions

Can I hire an agency that is based in Acton?

Not according to CDSS: its May 2025 home care file shows no Acton address. Agencies in Palmdale, Lancaster or the Santa Clarita Valley may serve 93510, or you can hire an independent caregiver here.

Must an Acton family pay its caregiver the $18.47 county rate?

Possibly. DCBA ties the unincorporated-area rate to work for a business or nonprofit and does not address household employers on its notice, so ask DCBA at (800) 593-8222. Nothing lower than California's $16.90 is lawful in any case.

Is there a ride to the doctor for an Acton senior?

On Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays, yes. Residents 60 and older ride the county's Acton & Agua Dulce Shuttle free, door to door, if they book at least a day ahead. Other days, plan on a caregiver who drives.

How does an Acton parent get on IHSS?

Phone DPSS on (888) 944-4477. Your parent applies for Medi-Cal if not already covered, the county assesses the hours, and the provider your parent picks, whether a relative or someone found here, is paid $19.64 an hour.

Which senior center serves Acton?

None is listed in Acton itself. The county's Antelope Valley Senior Center in Lancaster serves surrounding unincorporated areas, and the Acton shuttle can drop riders at the Santa Clarita Senior Center.

What will CaregiverConnect charge us?

Nothing to post the job. Talking with applicants and confirming the hire needs Family Premium, billed at $24.99 monthly. Caregivers keep all of their pay, and the platform does not vet them.
