How to find an in-home caregiver in Lancaster

In Lancaster the pool of caregivers is the Antelope Valley. The San Gabriel Mountains sit between the city and the Los Angeles Basin, and downtown Los Angeles is about 70 miles away, so the people who apply to a Lancaster posting will mostly live in Lancaster, Quartz Hill, Palmdale or the unincorporated towns to the east. Give your ZIP code, the times you need someone and what they will do, and note whether the caregiver will need to drive; the cards above, nearest first, change as caregivers join and as they widen their travel radius.

Language is worth stating up front. Nearly half of Lancaster residents are Hispanic or Latino (48.2%, ACS 2020–2024) and Spanish is the home language of 29.9% of those over five, so if your mother would rather talk in Spanish through the day, say so and ask applicants to list it.

Choosing well

Evaluating caregivers in Lancaster

Three credentials can be checked in Lancaster: listing on California's Home Care Aide Registry, enrollment as a Los Angeles County IHSS provider (which requires a fingerprint check through the state Department of Justice), and CDPH nursing-assistant certification. Ask which one an applicant has and confirm it yourself. Phone at least two people who supervised or employed them, meet them in the home with your relative present, and try a few paid shifts together before agreeing a regular week. If you order a background check, use a consumer reporting agency and the applicant's written permission. We do not vet anyone at CaregiverConnect: the Verified badge means a caregiver sent us a document and we looked at it, and that is all it means.

Questions families here ask at interview

  • Which part of the valley do you live in, and how would you get here if your car broke down?
  • Tell me about a client you looked after once Antelope Valley Medical Center discharged them: what worried you that first week?
  • Would you take my father to his clinic visits at High Desert Regional Health Center on East Avenue I?
  • Which of these do you have: Los Angeles County IHSS enrollment, a Home Care Aide Registry number, CNA certification?
  • Could you go through pill bottles and discharge papers with us, in Spanish if needed?
  • How would you keep my mother cool and hydrated on a summer afternoon when she resists drinking?
  • What is your rate, and what extra do you charge for nights, holidays or a last-minute shift?
Schedules and cost

What in-home care costs in Lancaster: hourly rates and schedules

You can post weekday daytime visits, a few evening hours for dinner and bedtime routines, weekend cover so a spouse can rest, or temporary full days after a discharge. If your relative already has IHSS hours, you can post only the extra hours you want to pay for privately. Overnight or live-in care needs a written agreement about sleep time and overtime.

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

Lancaster households earn a median $81,511 a year (ACS 2020–2024), below the county's $90,112, and that shapes what most families can pay. Inside the city the state minimum of $16.90 applies; Quartz Hill and other unincorporated communities follow the county's $18.47 for business and nonprofit employers. A caregiver hired directly will often price against the $19.64 IHSS wage, while an agency visit costs closer to the $40 California median CareScout reports. A relative on Medi-Cal can be assessed by DPSS for IHSS, and any hours the county authorizes are paid by the program.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.

How to hire a private caregiver in Lancaster (no agency)

CaregiverConnect is a marketplace, not an agency: you hire the caregiver directly, which is why there is no agency mark-up on their hourly rate. That also means screening is your responsibility, and we tell you how.

Questions

Hiring a caregiver in Lancaster: frequently asked questions

What is the first step to hiring help at home in Lancaster?

Create a free family account, post your ZIP code, schedule and tasks, and look over applicants and the cards above, then meet the ones you like; the hiring decision is yours alone.

What will a private caregiver charge in Lancaster?

Rates are set by each caregiver. Compare them with three benchmarks: $16.90 (state minimum), $19.64 (county IHSS) and $40 (CareScout’s California agency median).

Could I be paid for looking after my own parent in Lancaster?

IHSS allows it when the parent is eligible for Medi-Cal and the county assesses a need for in-home help. Apply on (888) 944-4477; the relative then completes provider enrollment with DPSS.

What if our regular IHSS provider cannot come?

Call PASC's backup attendant program on (877) 287-6789; covering missed shifts is what it is for. A caregiver you hire privately through this site can also cover gaps.

Does CaregiverConnect check caregivers before I meet them?

No. We publish what caregivers tell us and review any proof they upload for a badge; the checks that matter, references and a consented background report, are yours to run.

Is there a senior center in Lancaster we could use alongside home care?

The Antelope Valley Senior Center at 777 West Jackman Street is on the county's list of community and senior centers; call (661) 726-4400 for current activities.
