How to find an in-home caregiver in Mojave

Mojave is a census-designated place in Kern County with about 5,200 residents and no city government, so help for an older or disabled relative comes through county programs and private hiring. Census estimates for 2020–2024 show 450 residents aged 65 or older and 340 households with someone that age, and the share of older people reporting a disability is high, though the margin of error is wide. Many requests here are likely to involve an adult with a disability as well as an aging parent, so describe the condition, the tasks and any equipment, such as a wheelchair or a hoist, in your posting.

Caregivers may come from Mojave itself, from California City or Boron, or from Tehachapi, and some may travel by bus, since the four Kern Transit routes through town (100, 230, 240 and 250) stop on Inyo Street. Give the nearest cross street and whether the job involves driving your relative. One resident in five uses Spanish at home; note your relative's preferred language. If your relative has Medi-Cal or might qualify, start with IHSS, which can pay a family member or another caregiver you pick.

Choosing well

Evaluating caregivers in Mojave

Ask each applicant which of the state's credentials they hold and check what you can: IHSS enrollment with Kern County (it includes Live Scan fingerprints and an in-person orientation), a Home Care Aide Registry entry (agency staff must have one; independents may), and a CDPH nurse assistant or home health aide certificate if your relative needs transfers or other hands-on care. References come next, then an interview in the house with your relative there, then one or two paid trial shifts before regular hours start. We do not vet or background-check caregivers; if you want a check, a consumer-reporting agency can do one once the applicant agrees in writing.

Questions families here ask at interview

  • Will you drive here, or come by bus or Dial-A-Ride, and what is your plan if a bus runs late?
  • Have you cared for an adult with a physical disability, and how do you handle transfers from bed to wheelchair?
  • Could you take my father to the Adventist Health clinic on Belshaw Street, or to a hospital in Lancaster or Tehachapi?
  • Have you already enrolled with Kern County IHSS, and could you work the hours the county authorizes?
  • Do you speak Spanish, and could you explain medications to my mother in her language?
  • If there is a fall, a missed dose or a change in her mood, how and when would you tell me?
  • Your hourly rate: what is it, and what do you add for weekends or driving?
Schedules and cost

What in-home care costs in Mojave: hourly rates and schedules

Expect Mojave postings for morning personal care (getting up, bathing, breakfast and medication), split shifts with a second visit in the evening, IHSS hours shared between a relative and an outside caregiver, and short-term recovery care once someone comes home from the hospital. Families also post weekly errand and appointment days, timed around Routes 230 and 240, which run only on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

With a median household income of $55,660 in Mojave and CalFresh going to 40.3% of households, IHSS is usually the first thing to look into. The Kern County Department of Human Services office at 2340 Highway 58 in Mojave handles Medi-Cal applications, and once your relative has Medi-Cal the county can authorize IHSS hours paid at $17.90. For private hours, expect a rate near the $16.50 metro median and no lower than the $16.90 state minimum; the $40 agency figure is a California median. Paying someone yourself also brings employer duties, such as payroll taxes and overtime pay once a day passes 9 hours.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.

Questions

Hiring a caregiver in Mojave: frequently asked questions

Where do we apply for Medi-Cal and IHSS from Mojave?

The county's Department of Human Services has a Mojave office at 2340 Highway 58, (661) 824-7500, which takes Medi-Cal applications. For IHSS itself, phone Aging and Adult Services, (661) 868-1000; an intake social worker does a phone interview first and, if appropriate, a home visit to decide which hours to authorize.

Can a caregiver without a car work for us in Mojave?

Possibly, if you live near a bus stop or inside the Dial-A-Ride area. Two of the town's four bus routes operate on just three weekdays, so match the timetables to your shifts before offering the job.

How far is the nearest hospital from Mojave?

Mojave has a rural health clinic but no hospital; by road it is roughly 22 miles to the Tehachapi hospital and 26 to Lancaster's Antelope Valley Medical Center, so plan with your caregiver how a discharge home will be handled.

Where do I take a complaint about a nursing home or care home?

Kern County's Long-Term Care Ombudsman program: intake (661) 323-7884, with a 24-hour crisis line at 1 (800) 231-4024. The program also accepts walk-ins during business hours at its Truxtun Avenue office in Bakersfield.

Can I get support for myself as a family caregiver?

Yes. Valley Caregiver Resource Center, which the county lists for Family Caregiver Support, has an office in California City and can assess what you need, train you and arrange respite.

What does CaregiverConnect charge a family?

Posting is free and so is reviewing who applies. Messaging and hiring are unlocked by Family Premium, $24.99 monthly with no fixed term; caregivers are never charged a commission on what you pay them.
