How to find an in-home caregiver in Lost Hills

No city council serves Lost Hills: it is a census-designated place, and Kern County runs local government here. The ACS 2020–2024 estimate gives it 1,926 residents and a median age of just 25.1, with about 105 people aged 65 or older. Those older residents mostly live inside larger family households: 86 of the town's 488 households include someone 65 or over. Inside such a household the hired help tends to cover one clear need: the stretch of the day when everyone else is at work, a bath, or company for a grandparent who cannot safely spend all day alone.

Write the post in Spanish if that is what your relative speaks. ACS finds Spanish spoken at home by 94.9% of residents aged five and up, so asking for a bilingual caregiver is reasonable. Say clearly whether the job includes driving. Public transit is limited to a by-request Kern Transit run to Wasco on Thursdays, so most families look for someone who drives, and a caregiver based in Wasco or Shafter may ask for gas money.

Choosing well

Evaluating caregivers in Lost Hills

Some claims are easy to confirm. CDPH publishes a lookup for nurse assistant certificates, and a listing on the state Home Care Aide Registry shows a completed background clearance. An enrolled Kern County IHSS provider has passed Live Scan fingerprinting and attended the county's in-person orientation. Phone two earlier employers yourself. Next, book a paid trial visit on a day a family member can stay, and notice how patiently the caregiver speaks to your parent. CaregiverConnect does not look into anyone's identity, history or record. Any background check is yours to arrange, with the caregiver's written consent.

  • Can you start before the rest of us leave for work in the morning?

Schedules and cost

What in-home care costs in Lost Hills: hourly rates and schedules

Work-day cover. Close to half of working residents (48.7%, ACS) are employed in agriculture and related industries, so requests often ask for a caregiver who can arrive at dawn. Short visits. Two or three hours for breakfast, a bath and medicines are common. Clinic days. The Omni clinic sees medical patients on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, so a caregiver who can drive on those days is useful. Put the days and start times in your post.

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

Lost Hills is unincorporated, and UC Berkeley's inventory records no Kern County wage law, so a caregiver on your own payroll must get at least the state's $16.90. Personal-attendant overtime, at time and a half, begins after the ninth hour of a day or the 45th of a week. For comparison, aides employed in the Kern metro have a $16.50 median wage, and Kern IHSS pays providers $17.90. An agency at the CareScout median, $40 an hour, is costly next to the town's $45,976 median household income (ACS), so check IHSS first: if your relative qualifies, the county pays a caregiver the family picks, and that can be a son, daughter or grandchild.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.

Questions

Hiring a caregiver in Lost Hills: frequently asked questions

Is there a clinic inside Lost Hills for my mother?

Omni Family Health has a Lost Hills health center on Paso Robles Highway with medical hours three days a week. It accepts Medi-Cal and Medicare, and you do not need insurance to be seen; call (866) 707-6664 to book.

Is there a senior lunch program in Lost Hills itself?

The county's senior nutrition list, archived in September 2026, has no Lost Hills site. Route 115 does reach Wasco, where the Wasco Senior Center on Poplar Avenue is a listed site serving lunch on weekdays.

Can my daughter be paid to take care of me in Lost Hills?

Yes, through Kern County IHSS, once CDSS's Medi-Cal eligibility condition is met and Kern County approves your hours. She then signs up as your IHSS provider at $17.90 an hour.

Where can we get help with a Medi-Cal application?

Both the Lost Hills Family Resource Center on Office Lane and Omni Family Health list Medi-Cal enrollment help. A Medi-Cal determination is the first requirement for IHSS, so it is worth starting there.

Will caregivers from Wasco or Shafter come to Lost Hills?

Some will if the hours make the trip worthwhile. Name Lost Hills and your street in the post, mention any mileage you will cover, and caregivers whose travel radius covers 93249 will see the request.

What does CaregiverConnect charge a Lost Hills family?

Putting up a request and reviewing who applies cost nothing; Family Premium ($24.99 monthly) is what lets you write to applicants and lock in a hire. Verification is left to your family, since we do no background screening.
