How to find an in-home caregiver in Bodfish
Bodfish, unincorporated and classed as a census-designated place, has no town government of its own: and the help an older resident can get comes from the county, the Kern Valley Healthcare District and a handful of nonprofits based in Lake Isabella. ACS 2020–2024 counts 1,694 residents (±636), a third of them 65 or older, and 87 households headed by a woman over 65 who lives alone. State files list no home care agency, home health agency, care home or clinic at a 93205 address, so families here almost always hire a caregiver directly or arrange IHSS for a relative.
A caregiver who answers your posting will most likely come from Bodfish itself or from Lake Isabella. Spanish is spoken at home by 2.3% of residents, so English-only applicants will suit most households. Distance is the real issue. OSRM measures 7.2 road miles from the CDP's Census internal point to the valley senior center and 13.9 to the district hospital campus, and 15.3% of homes have no vehicle. When a parent has stopped driving, make a car a stated requirement and settle the mileage rate up front. The cards above refresh as people register.

Evaluating caregivers in Bodfish
Some credentials can be verified online. CDPH has a lookup for CNA certificates; agency-employed aides are listed on the state Home Care Aide Registry; and anyone already enrolled as a Kern IHSS provider has passed the county's provider screening. Ask for two references and ring both, including at least one family the applicant cared for. Hold the interview in the house with your parent there, point out the steps and the bathroom, and pay for one trial visit before you fix regular days. No one on CaregiverConnect has been background-checked or endorsed by us; a written release from the applicant lets you purchase a consumer background report on your own.
Questions families here ask at interview
- Which part of the valley are you coming from, and what is your backup if the car is in the shop?
- Are you willing to drive my mother to her appointments at the hospital campus on Laurel Avenue, about 14 miles each way?
- Have you cared for a veteran before, and are you comfortable dealing with VA appointments or paperwork?
- My father lives alone in a mobile home: how would you check that he is eating and taking his pills on days you are not here?
- Would you book Dial-A-Ride or the district's medical transport for him when you cannot drive?
- Once or twice a week, could he go with you to the Lake Isabella senior lunch?
- If we get IHSS hours, would you enroll as his provider with Kern County?
What in-home care costs in Bodfish: hourly rates and schedules
Bodfish families usually post a short list of fixed visits: two or three set mornings of washing, cooking and housework each week, one longer day for appointments and shopping in Lake Isabella, and a quick daily look-in on a parent alone at home. Following a hospital stay, expect to ask for daily visits for a few weeks. Because the drive is part of every visit, consider grouping hours into fewer, longer visits, and say in the posting whether that is possible.
| Reference point | Hourly | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Employed aides, Bakersfield–Delano metro (Kern County) | $16.50 median | BLS OEWS, May 2025 |
| IHSS provider wage, Kern County | $17.90 | CDSS; effective July 1, 2026 |
| California minimum wage | $16.90 | effective January 1, 2026 |
| Agency non-medical home care, California median (CareScout 2025) | $40.00 | CareScout Cost of Care Survey 2025 |
Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.
Rates are agreed between you and the caregiver. As reference points: California's minimum wage of $16.90 is the legal floor (UC Berkeley's Labor Center lists no Kern ordinance above it); BLS put the middle wage for aides across the Bakersfield–Delano metro at $16.50 in May 2025; Kern's IHSS providers earn $17.90 from July 1, 2026; and agency care costs a median $40 an hour statewide according to CareScout, though no agency is licensed in 93205. Add mileage on top. With a median household income of $39,863 and 51.1% of households on Social Security (ACS), many Bodfish families will want to apply for IHSS. IHSS applicants, according to the county, need Medi-Cal eligibility or enrollment, and a share of cost can apply. Overtime for a personal attendant starts after 9 hours in one day or 45 in one week.
No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.
